Our AAU tour takes us to United NJ AAU’s 15U squad
So far this summer, we’ve gotten a chance to really get to know United NJ’s entire program from top to bottom, checking out some of the best talent anywhere in the state.
Having already looked at the 17U and 16U rosters thoroughly, our attention takes us to the 15U team, one full of young talent who are going to shine coming into this season.
Let’s take a closer look at these prospects to really see what makes them stand out above the rest and what makes them must-watch players coming into the high school season.
We’re beginning this article by talking about a pair of rising sophomores at Voorhees, Sarah Pettegrove and Maya Wurst, two guards who already impressed in their first seasons playing varsity.
Starting with Pettegrove, she led all freshmen on the team in scoring and finished fourth on the team in scoring, playing in all 15 games for Voorhees. She’s a very well-rounded player already, showing a knack for crashing the boards and hauling in rebounds.
Her rebounding and scoring numbers were nearly identical and she also finished second on the team in assists. Pettegrove is a do-it-all kind of player, excelling well on the defensive end as a great shot-blocker, an excellent rebounder and a go-to when it comes to getting a turnover late.
We’ve seen her continue to work on her outside shooting, something she didn’t need to rely on much during the spring, but having that three-point shot just adds another level to her overall game. Expect big things out of Pettegrove come this fall/winter.
Her teammate, Wurst, came in as a bench player for Voorhees, but is going to see the court much more often as the team looks to fill the scoring voids of their two seniors who graduated this spring.
Wurst is the perfect player to take over that role, especially as someone who has shown this summer that she can run the point and run it well.
While we didn’t get to see her show off during the high school season, she’s come a long way in terms of development and maturity this summer. You’re going to see a strong, dynamic player come into the fray in Wurst this season.
The last player we’ll be talking about is rising sophomore Abby Young, a 5-8 swing guard from North Hunterdon, a school we’ve talked about a lot so far this summer.
The reason being is that it is producing some fantastic talent, and with a short roster and two seniors having graduated this spring, Young will be featured quite often and will be battling for a starting spot.
While the numbers this spring show that she was a bench option, she’s grown leaps and bounds in the summer, developing a stellar inside game while continuing to improve on her rebounding and defense.
She’s looking very agile on the floor, especially as a pesky, nimble defender, and is getting to passes much quicker to intercept them and create a turnover. It’s going to be fun watching her player development this coming fall.
We’re in our final days of AAU recaps and player profiles, but the high school season is right around the corner, so stay tuned with Prep Girls Hoops New Jersey for more.
