Having already double-dipped in the 15-17U teams, we’re now here to finish up talking about the 17U squad, one that will have many impact players in high school programs across the state this coming fall/winter.
Let’s take a closer look at the final players on this roster to see what makes them stand out above the rest.
We start out with one of the youngest players on the 17U roster, rising sophomore Julianna Almedia, a 5-9 guard from Saddle River Day.
Playing in one of the best girls basketball programs in New Jersey, she has a lot of mentors above her on the team and that’s only going to benefit her play.
She posted strong numbers as a freshman with much more room to improve, and she’s shown a lot of those improvements over the summer.
Almedia was actually second on SRD in blocks this spring, so don’t let her height fool you because she’s one of the best returning defensive players on that roster. What excited us the most when watching her this summer is her dominant interior play on offense.
She made a living in the middle in the spring, and that’s only going to get better as her high school career matures.
From the sophomore Almedia we go to one of the senior leaders on this team and the final player we’ll be talking about in this article, 5-11 forward Abbey Ferguson out of Holmdel.
Ferguson returns to Holmdel this season as the second-highest returning scorer and she’s going to be relied upon in a big way to hold down the fort in the middle.
She was the second-leading shot-blocker on varsity during the high school season and her defense is going to be much of the story of this season, with added emphasis going on her shot-blocking and rebounding.
Ferguson really stepped up all facets of her game in the summer, especially her offense, so don’t be surprised to see the offense running through her and her putting up double-double averages.
The train keeps rolling here at Prep Girls Hoops New Jersey, so stay tuned for more fantastic content as the summer winds down and the school year begins.
