Although I didn’t get to watch every team, I was still treated to brilliant performances by teams and individuals from a variety of age groups.
With that in mind, here are some of the best point guards from the tournament:
Ileana Morales | 2022 | 5’4” Point Guard | Texas Hoops 2022 | Medina Valley HS – Morales was the engine behind her team’s offense on Tuesday, scoring or assisting on the majority of their points. She is a phenomenal facilitator, but understood when to call her own number, scoring off the drive and from mid-range. The Medina Valley guard is very dynamic at that end, but her playmaking, vision, and ball handling stood out the most. She navigates the floor beautifully and keeps her teammates involved.
Jocelyn Coleman | 2022 | 5’5” Point Guard | Houston Skyrise Stars | Grace Christian Academy – Coleman was great at playmaking in transition. She recognized whenever her team had a numbers advantage and forced defenders to pick their poison, displaying excellent decision making in the process. The GCA guard also did her part to create fast break opportunities, coming up with steals on defense by harassing opposing ball handlers. She is tough-nosed and unselfish, which are both attributes that every coach wants in their lead guard.
Natalie Mesa | 2023 | 5’6” Point Guard | Bonafide Gold ’23 | Chapin HS – Mesa played well in her opening game of the tournament, helping to lead her team to a come-from-behind victory after trailing by double digits. She enjoyed success when attacking the basket both in transition and in the half court. The Chapin floor general was responsible for several gorgeous step through moves as well as coast-to-coast layups. Additionally, she showed that she isn’t afraid of taking some bumps on her way to the hoop by finishing through contact.
Sadie Sanchez | 2025 | 5’4” Point Guard | Hoop 10 United | Randall HS – Sanchez is a terrific three-point shooter off the dribble. She is also a crafty finisher when driving to the basket. That said, it was her distributing that set her apart on Wednesday. The 2025 prospect absolutely picked her opponents’ defense apart, consistently getting defenders out of position and subsequently delivering dimes to her teammates. Her vision and court awareness were both exceptional. Beyond that, she has active hands and can hold up on the perimeter despite her size disadvantage. Sanchez is a name you need to know moving forward.
Natalie Hambly | 2026 | 5’3” Point Guard | Texas LoneStar Gold – Hambly operated as a pass-first guard on Wednesday. She never let the ball stick to her and was great about keeping the ball moving. Her passing is very fundamentally sound for someone her age, stepping into her deliveries and releasing the ball with some zip on it when necessary. At the other end, Hambly was a gritty defender who constantly pressured opposing ball handlers.
