Having already explored the 17U and 16U teams in depth, we go back to looking at the 15U team, which has some excellent talent from the Central/North Jersey area.
Let’s take a closer look at these prospects to see what makes them stand out and what makes them players to watch for the coming high school season.
We start with the tallest player on this roster, Carissa Frederick, a 6-2 forward from Ranney and someone who is going to be a force in the Shore Conference this fall.
The biggest thing with Frederick is her size, which she utilizes well already. While still growing her frame as a rising sophomore, she’s mobile for her height and has an excellent inside game.
She plays much of her game in the paint and she draws a lot of contact, allowing her to get to the line early and often, where she’s developed into a strong free throw shooter.
What we say a lot during the summer is continued development on the defensive end and the start of her beginning to hone in on her offensive skills. She has the potential to be a superstar and her sophomore season could be the breakout campaign she needs to do that.
We move onto a player that has gone under-the-radar, but is easily one of the best players in the HCIAL, rising sophomore Jaylyn Orefice, a 5-10 forward from Union City.
She was the second-higher scorer on the team in the spring, putting up impressive stats for her first high school season. That bodes extremely well for her coming into her sophomore year as she’ll be relied upon as a team leader and playmaker on the floor.
Orefice has shown development into that more mature, more refined player this summer and already has all the makings of a superstar. She looks incredibly comfortable as a perimeter shooter and should really break out from beyond the arc this fall.
She also is a much stronger player, more specifically on the defensive end where she’s become more aggressive and more agile as the AAU season went on. Orefice is really going to be a player to watch this high school season.
The last player we’ll discuss in this article is rising sophomore Mia Troese, a 5-10 guard/forward out of Monmouth Regional who led the team in scoring this spring and is an exciting perimeter shooter.
Troese can shoot the lights out on the floor, showing a fantastic range as a shooter, able to get a basket from virtually anywhere she wants to.
We saw continued development in her outside game, which is a welcomed sign to show that she isn’t satisfied with her current play and she’s only looking to get better.
Something we saw a lot this summer is her ability to draw contact in the lane as she was far-and-away Monmouth’s best free throw shooter in the spring. Troese is aggressive on offense and welcomes contact because she knows that she can score on the floor or from the FT line.
We’ll be looking for more development in her rebounding and passing as well as more aggression on defense, which she showed in the spring and continued to show in the summer.
