With one of the best seats in the house, I was able to be up close and personal in all of the action from the Adidas 3-Stripe Select Basketball Championships in Birmingham, AL. Here are a handful of standouts that I saw.
2023 5’10” PG #1 Amari Whiting (NWBA 17u 3SSB)
Amari is a long, talented point guard with great handles that can see the entire floor at all times. She can take care of the ball during pressure or a full-court press and makes it look easy. Whiting is the kind of player who isn’t going to leave anything left on the court. She will fly around for every loose ball and hustle back on defense if the ball is turned over instead of standing and waiting like some of the players one may see. Wants to get low and guard somebody at all times.
2023 6’3” PF #15 Aimee Njike Keou (NWBA 17u 3SSB)
This is a name that you cannot forget and that I predict we will all be hearing about very soon. Aimee is a super strong and athletic power forward that can every position on the court and execute it well. Can finish and rebound high at the rim in a congested lane. Hustles to get back on defense for the big block or steal. High D1 potential.
2023 5’11” SF #25 McKenzie Smith (Lady Jets 16u 3SSB)
This girl can PLAY!!! On either end of the court, Smith is out there going as hard as she can. Whether she is putting pressure on the ball or getting a hand up and blocking out the shooter, she is all about getting the defensive stop. She makes the right decision for her team, not just for herself. Has good handles and can take care of the ball when necessary. Very solid team player.
2024 5’9″ PG #2 Zya Vann (Lady Jets 16u 3SSB)
Vann led the charge for her team in the 16u Semi-Finals with her energy shot-making ability. She is a super long and athletic guard with a lot of natural talent. Moves the ball well and makes sure to not let it stay in one place for too long. Zya can knock down the open jumper but isn’t afraid to drive hard in the lane. Can guard multiple positions and will put up a fight against the other teams big if needed. She was a SUPERSTAR in my book today.
2024 5’9” PG #4 Allison Clarke (Troop West Red 16u)
A solid point guard that has completely perfected her shot from the three-point line. Clarke is in constant communication with her teammates on and off of the court showing that she is a leader for her team. She is a very unselfish player that will do what she can to get her open teammate the ball. Plays hard on defense and goes out of her way to find a body to block out.
