So many good players, so little time. By the time I get around to naming all of the best players that I saw at the I-35 Showcase last weekend, it’s going to be time to go the Prep Girls Hoops Top 250 on Sunday. Oh well. It’s not a bad life, I suppose. Good players. Good basketball. Good people. I can’t complain. But, enough about me, here is a look at some more of the best players that I saw in the high school group down at the ’The Hive’ last weekend.
<strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Amunique Holmes | 5-6 PG | Putnam City | 2022 | <a href="https://x.com/amuniquetm">@amuniquetm</a></span></strong>
I have to be honest. I really wish we had waited to release the 2022 rankings for another few days. Once I saw the tremendous skill set that Amunique has, I quickly realized that I really missed the mark this time. Holmes is an all-around beast of a basketball player. She can shoot it from long range, she has great handles, and is a very good passer. I don’t know how I missed her before, but Amunique is definitely a college prospect. Keep an eye on Putnam City this season and you will see what I mean. She is a good teammate, a leader, and really fun to watch. Keep an eye out, coaches.
<strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">[player_tooltip player_id="241007" first="Bailey" last="Layman"] | 5-6 PG | Cleveland | 2022 | <a href="https://x.com/bailey_layman">@bailey_layman</a></span></strong>
Speaking of 2022 point guards who are 5’6" here is [player_tooltip player_id="241007" first="Bailey" last="Layman"], Although, we actually knew about Bailey heading into the event; though, it was a little late. Bailey made her debut in the most recent rankings at No. 59. She is a great passer with really, really good court vision. Her quickness with the ball in her hands was almost unmatched at the showcase. She is a smart player who can score as needed but would really serve a team well as a true point guard. She sees the floor well and can do just about anything that a coach would ask of her.
<strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">[player_tooltip player_id="241014" first="Kate" last="Melton"] | 5-7 SG | Edmond North | 2024 | <a href="https://x.com/KateMelton23">@KateMelton23</a></span></strong>
As I mentioned in an earlier write-up, I fully expect Edmond North to be in the 6A Championship Game this coming season. Kate is going to be a big part of that very good team. I am certain that you coaches are going to see a lot of her over the course of the season. What you will see is a very good guard that can shoot the lights out. She is a top-notch defender who goes hard all game long and can make life very hard for the opposing guard. Her high effort and drive are going to make you notice her immediately. You guys can thank me for the heads up later.
<strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">[player_tooltip player_id="231273" first="Aleah" last="Moree"] | 6-1 C | Winfield (KS) | 2024 | <a href="https://x.com/aleahmoree1023">@aleahmoree1023</a></span></strong>
Moree jumps out at you immediately for her great size. Only a 2024, she is not only tall, but she is extremely strong. Still learning, it is clear to see when watching her play that she has a tremendous skill set to build on. She scores well inside and defends there even better. She has good feet and positioning down low. She hit a few free throws and it was clear to see that if she doesn’t already shoot three-pointers with regularity, she can definitely learn to do so. With time, development, and good coaching, Moree will be one of the best "bigs" in the midwest region.
<strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">[player_tooltip player_id="261738" first="Myracle" last="Washington"] | 5-6 SG | Midwest City | 2023 | <a href="https://x.com/myracledanyel10">@myracledanyel10</a></span></strong>
Myracle was far and away one of my favorite players to watch last weekend. She is just a flat-out bucket. She can fill it up from deep. She has the handles to break some ankles and get to the rim with ease. She is quick and fast - and if you watch enough basketball, you know the difference. There wasn’t one game that Washington played in where she wasn’t the focal point of what her team was doing on offense and defense. She is that dynamic. When a team is put together at random like the teams at the I-35 Showcase were, you just really don’t expect any player to take over a game. Most of the players come out looking to shine and - to be completely honest - they often look like they’re trying too hard. In the end, what made [player_tooltip player_id="261738" first="Myracle" last="Washington"] stand out was that she was dominating, but almost look like she didn’t even have to try.
