Which South Florida prospect will lead the area in scoring? In 2020, players like 2021’s [player_tooltip player_id="91510" first="Lindsey" last="Weingard"], [player_tooltip player_id="91498" first="Zaida" last="Gonzalez"], [player_tooltip player_id="91499" first="Emma" last="Wallhoff"] and [player_tooltip player_id="91492" first="Jahnae" last="Midget"] finished near the top. For what it's worth, I think averaging around 25 points per game will give you a good chance.
Who will it be this season?
Let’s make some picks...
[player_tooltip player_id="91586" first="Aly" last="Avrach"] - Spanish River
[player_tooltip player_id="91586" first="Aly" last="Avrach"] should be near the top as a senior after averaging 21.5 points per game. Her mark was good for 17th in the state. Avrach shot 42 percent from field and 40 percent from beyond the arc. In addition, she shot a smooth 79 percent from the free throw line. Any uptick in those numbers should have her close to 25 points per game. Avrach can put down a handful of high outputs with how she shoots the ball.
[player_tooltip player_id="91566" first="Joey" last="Delancy"] - American Heritage
I can guarantee that 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="91566" first="Joey" last="Delancy"] will average more than 11.5 points per game during her senior season. For one, she can score from multiple (2,3,4) positions. Delancy is a great outside shooter from anywhere on the court. You also have a scoring void with 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="91557" first="Sydney" last="Shaw"] going to DME Academy. Add in her rebounding ability and Delancy can put up points. I expect her to have a monster senior season.
[player_tooltip player_id="151282" first="Alancia" last="Ramsey"] - St. Thomas Aquinas (Previous: American Heritage Delray)
2023 [player_tooltip player_id="151282" first="Alancia" last="Ramsey"] is one of the best frontcourt players we have in South Florida. The 6-foot-1 Ramsey is a double-double powerhouse around the post. In addition, she runs the floor well for a forward. I expect her to average 20+ points and 13+ rebounds with her new team. Ramsey finished 32nd in the state in scoring as a sophomore. She holds an offer from George Washington.
[player_tooltip player_id="154900" first="Cameron" last="Araujo"] - Miami High
A transfer from Miami Southwest, Araujo averaged nearly 20 points per game as a junior. The 5-foot-8 shooting guard eclipsed that mark in nine of 15 contests. You know she’s going to be in the running with her consistent scoring ability.
[player_tooltip player_id="153108" first="Taja" last="Stephens"] - Western
2022 [player_tooltip player_id="153108" first="Taja" last="Stephens"] averaged 13 points per game as a sophomore and 17.8 points per game as a junior. She also saw her rebounding margin go from four to eight per contest. Is it safe to assume she averages 20 points and close to ten rebounds per game? Her shooting percentages continue to get better as well. I am going with yes.
[player_tooltip player_id="243975" first="Vanessa" last="Richard"] - Atlantic
2022 [player_tooltip player_id="243975" first="Vanessa" last="Richard"] had a great junior season for the Eagles. The 5-foot-11 power forward nearly doubled her scoring average from the season prior. After posting 18.6 points and 11.6 rebounds per contest, Richards should be in the fold. She’s an All-county performer.
[player_tooltip player_id="91641" first="Karina" last="Gordon"] - St. Thomas Aquinas
2023 [player_tooltip player_id="91641" first="Karina" last="Gordon"] is a tremendous player for the Raiders. The 5-foot-8 guard averaged 16.4 points per game across 19 contests. She is very quick with the ball in her hands and can score relentlessly at the rim. Put her in the fold on one of the best teams in the area. She holds offers from Florida Atlantic and Florida International.
Others to watch: The following players averaged 15 or more points in 2020.
