Three of Florida’s Top Guards Make Decisions

With many prospects taking the opportunity to visit college campuses this fall, three of the state’s top guards make decisions the past two weeks. 2022s Sydney Shaw Sydney Shaw 5'9" | SG DME Academy | 2022 State FL Tonie Morgan Tonie Morgan 5'9" | PG FSUHS | 2022 State #18 Nation FL , and 2023 Taliah Scott Taliah Scott 5'8" | SG St. John's Country Day | 2023 State #31 Nation FL all made decisions this week. We take a look at their decisions.
Sydney Shaw Sydney Shaw 5'9" | SG DME Academy | 2022 State FL announced her decision to verbally commit to Auburn University. Shaw made her decision just several days after returning from her official visit at Auburn, completing her third official visit (she had previously visited St. Johns and Indiana). The 5’9 guard is one of the state’s top scorers and she has won multiple state titles and had a big summer for Miami Suns Team Fowles on the Nike EYBL circuit! She has been one of the state’s most highly recruited prospects for the past several years having played on the 17U EYBL exposure circuit since 8th grade. Look for Shaw to be an impact player new Auburn Head Coach Johnnie Harris and be an All-Conference level player in the SEC.
Tonie Morgan Tonie Morgan 5'9" | PG FSUHS | 2022 State #18 Nation FL has verbally committed to Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA. Morgan is one of the nation’s top point guards and was highly sought after by schools all across the country. She had narrowed her final schools down to 8 back in January (NC State, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss, Florida, North Carolina, Oregon, FSU, and Kentucky) but picked the Yellow Jackets this past week posting her decision via social media thanking Georgia Tech Head Coach Nell Fortner for recognizing her talents and proving her the opportunity. Morgan is a high level athlete, with great decision making skills, a high basketball IQ, and exception scoring opportunity. She could potentially compete for the starting point guard position as a Freshman and be an impact player for the Rambling Wreck all four years of her career.
Taliah Scott Taliah Scott 5'8" | SG St. John's Country Day | 2023 State #31 Nation FL is off the boards and taking her talents to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, AR. Scott entering her Junior season as Oakleaf still has two more years of High School before she can enroll at Arkansas but made the decision to verbally commit early after visiting Arkansas campus on an unofficial visit last week. Scott has proven to be one of the nation’s elite athletes and drew college coaches from all across the country to the sidelines this summer with her play for FGB. She averaged 23.4 points per game for Oakleaf leading them to an impressive 24-3 record with a district and regional title before falling to eventual state champion HB Plant HS in Lakeland in the state semi-finals.

Nerishlyan Moreau (Gateway HS) has committed to the University of Tampa. Moreau averaged 8.8 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.7 steals, and 3.2 rebounds per game last year helping Gateway to an 18-8 record. The 5’2 point guard is quick, has solid handles, and is a playmaker. She does a good job pushing the tempo and getting the ball to her teammates in scoring positions.
Madelyn Leslie Madelyn Leslie 5'10" | SG Gulf Coast | 2023 State FL (Gulf Coast High School) was on campus at the University of Tampa for an unofficial visit. Leslie was Gulf Coast’s 2nd leading scorer last season at 11.2 PPG and is one of the state’s top shooters knocking down 46/142 for 32% from 3 in 28 games helping Gulf Coast to a 22-6 record.
It has been a busy couple of weeks for Sydney Shaw Sydney Shaw 5'9" | SG DME Academy | 2022 State FL . In addition to making her decision to continue her academic and athletic career at Auburn, she also made the decision to transfer from American Heritage Plantation to DME Academy in Daytona Beach. This is Shaw’s third High School as she has won multiple state championships at Miami Country Day and American Heritage. At DME Academy, she joins her Miami Suns teammate Amiya Evans Amiya Evans 6'2" | PF DME Academy | 2022 State FL in Daytona Beach for her Senior year as well as one of the state’s top prospects Chloe Kitts Chloe Kitts 6'2" | SF Faith Christian Academy | 2022 FL . The trio of Shaw, Evans, and Kitts gives DME Academy length, scoring and play makers.
One of the state’s top guards Eleecia Carter Eleecia Carter 5'7" | CG Lake Highland Prep | 2023 State FL (Lake Highland Prep) visited Florida Gulf Coast unofficially. As a Sophomore, Carter was Lake Highland Prep’s leading scorer for 12.2 PPG helping them to a 19-1 record and a FHSAA State Championship. The 5’8 guard is versatile and a crafty scorer, that is athletic and has a well rounded game.
Amiya Evans Amiya Evans 6'2" | PF DME Academy | 2022 State FL has continued making the rounds for her recruiting visits and on campus at University of Central Florida (UCF) taking in a football game. The 6’2 Forward narrowed her list of colleges to five in August. Her top five is Miami, Kentucky, UCF, Mississippi State, and Arizona State. She is one of the country’s top inside out players and is a beast in the paint!
Former Lake Mary Varsity Girls Coach Peggy Knight has entered the college ranks, accepting the position of Director of Recruiting for Mississippi State. Knight joins McCray-Penson’s staff as the Director of Recruiting after the previous three seasons coaching at 7A Lake Mary High School in Lake Mary, Fla., located outside of Orlando. While leading the Rams program, she helped guide multiple student-athletes to all-conference honors and was named the SAC and AAA Trophies Winter Sports Coach of the Year in 2021.
