The Class of 2024 is guard-heavy, and these are just a few of them that you need to look out for and will be hearing their names a lot this year. All of these players were starters on the varsity squads in their freshman seasons and are poised for a big season.
[player_tooltip player_id="323208" first="Janiyah" last="Bone"] | 5-8 SG | Bob Jones
Janiyah is part of a youth movement at Bob Jones High School under Coach Jasmine Powers. She is a big guard that shoots the three very well. Janiyah is also a great defender that is not afraid to use her body to defend, can guard without fouling and uses her long and lean body. She is a two-way standout that will be asked to do a ton this season and will only get better.
[player_tooltip player_id="323390" first="Mia" last="Hollingsworth"] | 5-8 G | Hamilton
Mia was chosen third-team in 4A last year which is fitting as she was only a freshman. This season will be her third year on varsity so she definitely has some experience. She is a shooter from mid-range that can extend the defense out to the three-point line as well. She is an aggressive scorer and shooter offensively but is also not afraid to play defense and try and get in the opponent’s head.
[player_tooltip player_id="329973" first="Abethany" last="James"] | 5-7 PG | Sparkman
Abethany is a point guard that is a floor general with a great basketball IQ. The upside to her game is the fact that she is a shooter that also has a tight handle and can bring the ball up the floor. She is a knockdown shooter that was on varsity as a freshman and is poised for a big year.
[player_tooltip player_id="323392" first="Ivey" last="Maddox"] | 5-10 G | Good Hope
Ivey is a tall guard that uses her length to get to where she wants. She was selected second team in the 4A all-state post-season award. Ivey is a good shooter that scores efficiently. She also can get out on fast breaks and break a defense down with the dribble or get to the rim and score.
[player_tooltip player_id="323399" first="Amiya" last="Redus"] | 5-9 SG | Hazel Green
Amiya just transferred to Hazel Green from Tanner, where she has been on varsity since 7th grade. With playing that long comes veteran leadership and understanding situations. She comes from a family with "that" DNA which goes back to former Pittsburgh Pirate Gary Redus. Amiya is not the one you want to leave open and she will make you pay if you forget about her. Her three-point shooting average is very high and with her spacing the floor the way that she does, defenses have to pay attention.
[player_tooltip player_id="323400" first="Gracie" last="Rowell"] | 5-7 SG | Skyline
Gracie is another sophomore that was very instrumental on her varsity squad as a freshman. She was named to the second team in 1A and comes back with high expectations. Gracie has produced several double-double games, including the state championship game. She is one of the top shooters in the class that you must account for whenever she is on the floor and if you don’t, "bottom’s up".
