Continue ReadingAs I continue to dissect the ’23 class, I’ll look at some of the best shooters. These shooters a season ago all shot with a decent volume and solid accuracy, especially from three. I didn’t want to make this too much of a projection piece. I opted to base it on the recent results. These players, in my opinion, are the best shooters in the ’23 class as of writing this article.
Tieryn Plasch Tieryn Plasch 5'7" | CG Northwestern | 2023 State WI -5’7 G-Northwestern: Plasch has been an incredibly consistent scorer in her first two seasons. What is more incredible from a shooting standpoint is that most of her shooting comes off the dribble. She gets a lot of looks based solely on isolation ability. If Plasch can shoot 41% with a fair amount of those attempts being off the dribble, if she could get wide-open spot-ups about five times a game, it’d be interesting to see what she would shoot percentage-wise. Plasch’s ability with the ball makes her a very talented offensive player. With her shooting and passing ability, she can literally and mentally break defenses.
Mallory Hoitink Mallory Hoitink 5'10" | SG Slinger | 2023 State WI -5’10 G-Slinger: Hoitink’s shot is incredibly consistent. It looks the same 10 feet from the basket as it does 20 feet away from the basket. She shot well over 40% on 150 attempts from three last season. If she were simply a floor spacer, she would be great at keeping defenses honest. Hoitink is excellent when it comes to scoring around the basket. She is good at finishing with both hands around the basket. She has a combination of strength and agility to use to get into the paint. All of her dribble penetration revolves around defenses having to defend Hoitink from behind the line.
Emily Jaenke Emily Jaenke 5'10" | CG Fox Valley Luthern | 2023 State WI -5’10 G- Fox Valley Lutheran: Jaenke is much more than just a shooter, but she’s still a great shooter. Jaenke shot 40% on 120 attempts from three last season. Jaenke has a lot of tools offensively, but her ability to shoot really opens up the floor for her to excel. If she finds space on the perimeter defenders have to close out when she catches the ball. When she gets by the initial close out she can create a halfcourt five on four advantage. With those advantages her ability to score in the midrange and find open teammates can shine. Jaenke is an excellent offensive talent with a high basketball IQ. In a halfcourt offense her shooting, especially as a wing, helps her unlock defenses.
Sammy Beyer-5’7 G-Appleton East: When playing against Appleton East, the idea of playing in a zone should never enter a coach’s mind, mainly due to Beyer. Beyer’s set shot is as smooth as they come. Beyer also understands the attention she demands on the perimeter. Beyer has more juice attacking closeouts than I thought. Beyer pairs that with good vision that she uses to pass to cutters. Her senior will be one I’ll wait for because Beyer will likely be the highest usage offensive player after Emily La Chapell Emily La Chapell 5'11" | CG Appleton East | 2022 State #57 Nation WI and Lily Hansford Lily Hansford 6'2" | SG Appleton East | 2022 State WI graduate. At that point, we will better understand how she can handle a lead role.
