It’s definitely been a tough draw for the Gators, who have been trying to get out of the basement of the Colonial Conference, but in 2021, they saw a glimmer of hope.
The shortened season ended up benefitting the Gators as they went 7-4 overall and 6-4 in divisional play. Head Coach Dan McGowan was one of the coaches of the season across the state as Gateway was one of the feel good stories of the spring.
Prep Girls Hoops New Jersey is taking a look at different programs across the state in preparation for the upcoming high school girls basketball season.
With this winter being the first full season in nearly two years, there are a lot of unknowns around, and in this article, PGH NJ will take a closer look at Gateway on what to expect for the winter.
To be honest, Gateway is a much of a wild card this season as they were coming into the spring. The big problem is that three impact players, Cecelia Bay, Catherine Cimino and Catherine Lombardo, all graduated in the spring.
Five seniors are gone from this roster, but an injection of youth is the reason why the Gators ended up being so successful last season. Gateway’s top scorer, Angelina Zagone Angelina Zagone 5'9" | SF Gateway | 2024 State NJ , returns for her sophomore season. Her freshman year was incredibly impressive, averaging 12.0 PPG, 9.0 RPG and 1.0 BPG.
She’s an early season All-Conference favorite as one of the best forwards in the region. The one unknown on this season’s roster is Lindsey Naulty, who has played in just four games the past two seasons.
We don’t know how much she’ll be able to play this season, but there are two seniors who are for sure going to have big seasons for Gateway this winter.
Maddy Reed was Gateway’s best perimeter shooter and led the team in assists. She averaged 7.6 PPG, 2.1 RPG, 2.4 APG and 1.5 made three-pointers a game in the spring. She was as automatic of a three-point shooter as anyone in the conference.
Alongside her is fellow senior Rachel McKnight, Gateway’s third-best returning scorer and second-best returning rebounder. She averaged just 2.8 PPG and 2.2 RPG in the spring, but she’ll be counted upon in a big way this season.
The Gators have a thin returning roster and will be relying on some new names in a big way, so expect a lot of turnover but a lot of success this winter.
