Along with our prospect rankings and watch lists, we’re also taking a closer look at some of as many teams in the state as we can talk about with the season fast approaching.
South Jersey is an area of much untapped potential in the state and can go under-the-radar when it comes to coverage. However, it’s an underrated hotbed for basketball and we’ve seen that over the spring and we’ll continue to see it this winter.
For this team preview, we’ve started looking at the Tri-County Conference, and we continue that in this article by looking at Timber Creek.
The Chargers have been competing for conference titles over the past several seasons, and the same was true in the spring. Timber Creek finished last season with an 11-3 record, struggling however in divisional play with a 5-3 record.
Despite struggles, Timber Creek ran the table in the Tri-County Conference Tournament, defeating Gloucester Catholic in the title game, 46-38.
Their roster coming into this season will be seeing some wholesale changes, but there’s a name at the top that sets the Chargers apart from the rest, and that is Amaya Burch Amaya Burch 5'7" | SG Timber Creek | 2022 State NJ , a top player in South Jersey.
Burch averaged 18.5 PPG and 7.4 RPG in her junior year, and her presence was felt in that championship game as she put up 14 points and eight rebounds. She’s one of the best pure scorers in the state and is an instant playmaker with the ball in her hands.
Unfortunately, Burch will not have Amiaya Morgan alongside her as Morgan and fellow senior Tatina Carr graduated in the spring.
We’ll see some different faces stepping up into bigger roles, starting with Timber Creek’s third-leading scorer, Taja Brown. She’s a big presence in the interior, averaging a team-high 8.8 RPG last season.
Of the other three players on last year’s roster that weren’t seniors, two will be relied upon heavily as playmakers this season and one is a question mark.
The one question mark heading into the winter is Corinne Kolb, who appeared in just two games last season. She’s a multi-sport athlete and is currently in the midst of her fall season with girls soccer, so we’ll see about her health and playing time heading into this season.
The two non-question marks on this team heading into the winter are juniors Julianna Coluccio and Jessenia Edwards. Coluccio was second in assists and third in steals and three-point shooting in the spring and Edwards led the Chargers in blocks and was third in rebounds.
Both were crucial parts to this championship team last year, but what we’ll be watching is if they can make that next jump in success coming into the winter. Now juniors, their veteran presence is key.
The championship this spring was just the beginning for what could be another massive season for this program, so keep a close eye on Timber Creek heading into the season.
