With the 2021-22 New Jersey high school girls basketball season happening within the next several weeks as November is nearly upon us, we have still much more to discuss.
The next class to talk about is the 2024 class and in this article, we will discuss the No. 7-9 top sophomore prospects in the Garden State as ranked by the PGH NJ team.
No. 7: Christina Parrella – 5-9 CG, Demarest
Parrella burst onto the scene for Demarest as a sharp-shooting freshman who led the team in made three-point field goals, making nearly 2.5 a game in the spring.
She finished second on the team in scoring at 15.5 PPG, posting three 20+ point performances in the process. Parrella is pure scorer and that shows as 45 percent of her scoring comes from the three-point arc.
She’s an incredible off-ball player and knows how to pick her spots on the court. We’ve seen just how well she can shoot from beyond the arc and she’s not only effective, but an efficient shooter. If this is just the beginning for Parrella, we’re in store for a great high school career.
No. 8: Aurora Almón – 6-4 PF, Trenton Catholic
Almón is already fitting in well with Trenton Catholic, a top-three program in New Jersey, and there’s a reason as to why this 6-4 forward is a member of the Dominican national team.
You cannot teach size in basketball and she uses it to her advantage as we saw in the spring, posting six games with double-digit rebounds. Almón has an incredible amount of raw ability that we’ve seen in spurts so far.
She’s quickly starting to unlock more and more potential on the floor and playing for an AAU program like New Height NYC is helping her realize that at a faster pace. Almón is a future walking double-double and opponents are going to have nightmares about facing her in the paint for years.
No. 9: Julianna Almedia – 5-9 PG/SG, Saddle River Day
We talked about Almedia during the summer during our NJ Shoreshots series and this guard had a strong initial showing with Saddle River Day in her freshman season, averaging 4.5 PPG and 3.4 RPG.
She effectively solidified her role in the starting lineup for this season and was one of seven players to play in all 13 games for SRD, so if she doesn’t start, she’ll have a prominent bench position for her sophomore season.
You don’t sophomores playing on the 17U AAU teams often, so while there’s a lot to live up to, Almedia is the player to meet those expectations. With SRD’s top four scorers graduating this spring, expect Almedia’s role to grow and her numbers to skyrocket.
