Continue ReadingThe Rock Valley is host to some of the best individual talents in the state. Last season saw some team success as well, with Jefferson finishing the season at 19-3. This season the conference will have some of the best young players as well. It would not surprise me to see this conference have some real success in March. However, some players have a chance to make a leap this year.
Teagan Mallegni Teagan Mallegni 6'1" | SF McFarland | 2024 State WI -6’0 F-’24-McFarland: Mallegni is one of the best players in Wisconsin regardless of class. Last season she was an efficient scorer as a freshman, which is uncommon. She is not a player who will rest on her laurels. She is continuing to get better. Mallegni can help her team compete at a high level in her first normal(ish) season. It is impressive how a freshman just took an opportunity and ran with it in only 14 games. Her natural ability to score efficiently and rebound make her a very gifted forward that can do everything.
Ava Brandenburg Ava Brandenburg 5'10" | CG Evansville | 2024 State WI -5’10 F-’24-Evansville: If you find Brandenburg playing at Evansville, her club team, or anywhere she plays hard all the time. Her team could be down by 50 and still plays how she would if it were a two-point game. She pairs that mentality with a lot of guard skills in a forwards frame. Her freshman season was successful, efficiently scoring 12 points and pulling down five rebounds a game. Brandenburg also has a lot of touch from the outside, shooting 40% on her three-pointers. She also uses that touch when she plays in the post where she can bully smaller defenders. Not often do you see players able to play bully ball and a finesse style.
Sylvia Fox Sylvia Fox 5'7" | CG Edgerton | 2023 WI -5’7 G-’23-Edgerton: Fox is one of the best playmakers in the Rock Valley. She averaged close to four assists a season ago as a sophomore. She was also balancing her creation for teammates with some scoring of her own, putting up 13.2 points a game. Fox is dangerous when the ball is in her hands, making her an interesting rising junior in the Rock Valley.
Abbie Dix Abbie Dix 5'11" | PF Brodhead | 2023 WI -5’11 F-’23-Brodhead: Dix is a true post who has excellent anticipation and awareness. She is a player who knows where she needs to and gets there at exactly the right time. She is a pain to defend because of her ability to move defenders without backing them down. On defense, she is aware of everything going on around her. If a player on the opposite post is fronted and a guard tries to pass over the defender, Dix will steal it. I’m yet to even touch on how impressive her numbers were as a sophomore. She was the second leading scoring as a sophomore scoring 17.6 points a night. She also almost averaged a double-double last season, only missing out by five total rebounds last season to reach a 10 per game average.
