Did I see any #D1Locks, well I saw some that have the potential to do just that and many others already showing they have “next level” potential as long as they keep working and progressing so here you go
2026
Carmello Guerrero- 5’4 (Bonham)
Guerrero had on my favorite number and it has nothing to do with basketball but of my favorite series on free TV, 24 and yes, she saved plenty as well as she showed me off the top that her first step was not to be taken lightly as she took defenders with ease multiple times yet it helped that she could drop the jumper, mid to long-range, well very long-range, but her ability to see the floor while going full speed was nice, so was her eagerness to defend as well as doing a good job of reading plays and anticipating the pass which also led to scoring opportunities
Maddie Francis-5’8 (Silverton)
Francis showed some scary upside because she’s long and athletic and very active on both ends of the court. She swatted away balls in the passing laned as well as came away with steals playing it yet she also showed nice timing to block, alter and (or) deflect shots which was also a huge positive. Throw in the fact that she “battles on the boards” and I’m talking both ends of the court and she also showed she could score after contact on putbacks as well as score after the lick attacking the rim. I like her pull-up jumper, she releases it fluidly and it’s accurate
Maddison Chavez-5’7 (Panhandle)
Chavez also fell into that “long and athletic” group as she smoothly fills up the stat sheet but let me start with her defense, both in the drills as well as when the games started and she does a good job of staying in front of her man and also understands how to keep a hand in their face but she did a good job rebounding, on both ends of the court, in fact, she went after the ball on the rim, drop that #BATTLES hashtag for that but she has a nice jumper that she creates under pressure and using that same creativity, she did a good job scoring off the dribble
Emerson Plummer–5’9 (DeZavala)
Plummer unstopped the drain because she is just on the verge of taking off, simply because of her size, her body, her skill-set, and that “you won’t outwork me” mindset which falls into one of those things you just can’t teach. Yes she can defend inside the paint as well as outside, yes she can score with players literally hanging on her and yes she maneuvers around the basket very well to score with either hand but she can also bring the defender outside and show she can hit the short jumper as well as put it on the floor and get to the basket
Lauryn Pierce-5’1 (Estacado)
Pierce plays within herself and showed she could score in the flow yet she also showed she did some things that don’t necessarily show up on stat sheets or score sheets like set picks that lead to baskets or understanding how to switch and trap and force the offensive player to commit a turnover by throwing the ball away, yes I see everything, I’m not a novice but she also showed she could score either off the dribble as well as dropping the jumper, she did that from both the mid and long-range
2027
Kandyce Ramiez-5’0 (Hereford)
Ramirez nickname is “bananas” and trust me, that’s what she’ll have defnders going because she is so feisty with the ball yet she has a flair that just comes naturally either to handle the ball and split the defenders to make passes for assist opportunities or to just keep it and score but she’s “heady” and doesn’t force anything and when you understand how to let the game come to you at this stage, that’s going to be big down the road, especially when you fall into that #sizedontmatter category because she can play. The pull-up jumper was nice, so was her defense
Gracie Grimes-5’3 (Westover)
Grimes caught my eye initially during the skills session as she just went hard on defense no matter what and yes, that translated over to the 5 on 5 action but her “going hard” is just one aspect because she plays within herself and understands how to score in the flow as well as handle the ball in the open court while being “manned up” but she can also shoot it and her mid to long-range gave her options since she could attack and finish as well as see the floor but with her BB-IQ and willingness to get after it, her upside is impressive especially as she gets stronger
Gracie Williams-4’11 (DeZavala)
Williams gets the hashtag dropped #sizedontmatter because she can certainly play and with her array of moves as well as maneuvering with the ball, yes her handles are nice, notice I have plural because she can use either hand so that will definitely come in handy but what I really enjoyed was hearing her talk on the floor, in fact, that was huge with this group and it had me beaming because I love #THROWBACK stuff but I also love blazing passes on the money in traffic as well as small guards understanding how to get their shot off against taller opponents, and she knocked it down
Jolee Pigg-5’1 (Nazareth)
Pigg definitely sent me a message after watching her do some dazzling ballhandling but she also showed she could get the defender off balance with both the HEZ as well as the stutter-step not to leave out her ability to stop on a dime and then explode which is different from the HEZ as that was in the open court. A smooth crossover also was nice, so was her ability to create her shot as well as make the right pass to the right person but her ability to score in the flow and not force anything was very good
Angelyce Green-5’3 (Austin)
Green was exciting even before the event started as she came in ready to play and she left showing she could but what I also see is her athleticism is so ahead of her years that it’s scary, especially with her body control and the stop and pop jumper, a true jumper in which she elevates off the ground, is going to create plenty issues yet she loves to defend and that athleticism comes in handy on that end as well as she can apply full-court pressure to create turnovers or use her quick hands to come up with steals but she also plays cornerback well and intercepts the ball
2028
Haven Pointer-5’4 (Bushland)
Ponter definitely got the point across early after interacting with her before the event started and when I asked how she felt about being the baby of the babies at the event, her response was “this will help determine my destiny” and that just stuck with me like defenders were trying to stick with her however she’s athletic and explosive and her first step, combined with some advanced body control made her an “and one” waiting to happen. She goes hard yet is under control, showed the nice pull-up as well as solid ball-handling under pressure and she plays defense
