Here’s a quick peek at the 5A/4A/3A Colorado Springs Metro League-South.
What happened in something called Season B
Canon City went through the league unscathed – Tigers were 9-0. Coronado was two games back. The other four (Harrison, Mesa Ridge, Palmer and Widefield) each had losing loop and overall records, so, yes, work needs to be done.
Teams – Canon City, Coronado, Harrison, Mesa Ridge, Palmer, Widefield.
Which playoff team(s) made the loop’s most noise?
Canon City entered the Class 4A bracket impressive at 10-2 and having missed a couple of games because of COVID-19. It was the No. 13 seed. The Tigers got past No. 20 Littleton in a slow one, 46-42. Their reward for advancing was a road game at Mullen and a 69-22 spanking. Coronado (9-4 overall) also slipped in – the Cougars were the 21st seed and were beaten by 20 points, 56-36 to No. 12 Mead.

The short list of returnees to follow
[player_tooltip player_id="329409" first="Alyssa" last="Rodriguez-Trujillo"], Palmer, Jr., G,. 5-4
The league’s No. 3 scorer returns. Her 14.8 average was good, but needs to up her shooting, which was 31 percent in 2020-21.
Allie Liescher, Coronado, Jr., G, 5-11
Good size and range out front. Averaged 13.2 points to top the Cougars and was No. 4 in the league.
[player_tooltip player_id="259821" first="Eleasia" last="Woolridge"], Mesa Ridge, Sr., G, 5-5
PGH-CO 2022 No. 81. Had a season-high 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting in the first matchup against Widefield; Grizzlies are looking for more of it.
[player_tooltip player_id="207104" first="Emily" last="Till"], Canon City, Sr., F-C, 6-0
An inside force who was good for 12.6 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game. Footwork, speed and quickness inside need improvement, but probably the league’s top force down low.
You may also wish to keep track of …
Madelyn Ley, Canon City, Sr., G-F, 5-9
The Tigers’ all-arounder who knows how to fill up a box score. Effective outside running the show, but also a capable competitor inside on defense and getting to the rim.
[player_tooltip player_id="263617" first="Bray" last="Pelt"], Mesa Ridge, So., G, 5-6
PGH-CO 2024 No. 69. Didn’t shoot it well from the floor (27 percent), but had the courage to take regular shots as a newbie. A comer with good court sense and a willingness to improve.
A short look ahead to 2021-22
The CSM-South will have more opportunities to play outside its group, so improvement seems assured. The past season’s top teams again figure to contend and Mesa Ridge returns a solid core. In a league not bursting at the seams with talent, playing together will be a must if there’s any significant movement throughout its classifications.
