Continue ReadingOak Mountain traveled to Mortimer Jordan last night and ran into a buzz saw. The Lady Blue Devils were clicking very well in their first contest out of the gates. Oak Mountain was overwhelmed early by the offensive onslaught and could never get their footing in the game. Mortimer Jordan exploded for 23 1st quarter points and never looked back. At the half, Mortimer Jordan led 36-14.
The Lady Blue Devils had balanced scoring in the first half.
Isabellah Machen had 8pts
Sarah Kanaday had 8pts
Jaylen Pleasant Jaylen Pleasant 5'5" | PG Mortimer Jordan | 2023 State AL had 10pts.
The 2nd half saw the offensive juggernaut continue their dominance and expand their lead. Give Oak Mountain credit as they never stopped fighting, but Mortimer Jordan was the better team on this night.
Mortimer Jordan has a culture of excitement, passion, and a high level of play. They looked extremely connected as a unit and were a very unselfish group. Here are a few standouts from last night’s contest:
Isabellah Anne Machen
Known as Bellah, one of the first things that jumped from the court to my notes is that she is a shooter and has one of the quickest releases that I have seen from a high school player, boys or girls, in a while. She does not need much space to get the shot off, and she can feel it up quickly. Bellah is a thrilling offensive talent.
Bellah finished with 11pts.
When asked what makes this team special, Bellah replied,
“This team has put in a lot of work for four years. We have been building it up over the past four years, and it is starting to pay off. Lots of people are starting to notice. The coaching staff, we have a great coaching staff, that I could not ask for anything better. I am very proud of my team; I honestly cannot go over how much we have worked this last year when we fell short against Hazel Green. We are expected to have a really good run this year.”
Jaylen Pleasant Jaylen Pleasant 5'5" | PG Mortimer Jordan | 2023 State AL
You want to see the pilot of this ship, well look no further than JP. She is the floor general and makes it all go. She does everything that a coach wants. Pull-up, C&S, gets to the cup, creates for teammates and self, aggressive on defense, and the list goes on and on. She handles the rock, has good floor vision, and pushes the rock hard in transition. She is quick with the ball in her hands, and when her shooters are sprinting the floor, she has her choice of weapons to distribute the rock to.
JP finished with 13pts.
Sarah Kanaday
Remember me telling you that this team is loaded with shooters? Well, here is one of the best on the team. She has to be considered a threat from behind the arc as soon as the ball touches her hand. She had an exciting moment last night as she scored her 1,000 point in her career. Her c&s game is the strength of her game and is one of the best-utilized weapons on the Lady Blue Devils squad.
Sarah finished with 14pts.
The Lady Blue Devils are focused out of the gate and have their sight set on Birmingham, but don’t think you can catch them looking past anyone because they understand it is one game at a time. If you are a fan of the game and girls basketball, I encourage you to check out the Lady Blue Devils as they host their own classic on Sat. Nov. 13, which has a loaded field of teams.
