Continue ReadingI didn’t have as much time as I would have liked down in Moore on Saturday and alas, I’m only one man, but I tried to see as many games as I could in a short amount of time. The goal was to get a glimpse of some smaller schools that I wouldn’t get the chance – most likely – to see otherwise during the season. As you may have seen on Twitter, I passed out cards to coaches with every team that I saw and asked for a roster to be emailed to me – but, as of Monday evening, I’ve only received two.
I’m not criticizing, I know coaching is hard and extremely time-consuming, but I say all of this to say that I may not be able to write about all of the players who stood out to me because I don’t know who they were. I also may get a few names wrong. Sometimes I’ll just be guessing, but the goal is to get the players recognized so that college coaches can reach out to the ones who have the talent for the next level; as far as that goes, there were a lot in Moore on Saturday!
Game 1 Standouts: Deer Creek vs. Comanche
Kobei Smith Kobei Smith 5'7" | CG Edmond Memorial | 2024 State OK | 5-7 CG | Deer Creek | 2024 | @KobeiSmith_
Our No. 25-ranked player in the class of 2024 looks to have an expanded role on this year’s Antlers squad. The team seems to have picked up a few injuries in either the offseason or preseason, and it means that Smith is being called upon to shoulder more of the ball-handling and scoring load. Kobei is a tremendous all-around player who clearly does not shy away from the spotlight and it could mean that her stock rises even more as the next few years go by. She can score from all three levels and is most definitely no slouch on the defensive end. Deer Creek will be fun to watch with her at the helm and as they get more healthy, keep an eye out for them later in the season – they could become very dangerous.
Gracee Miller | 5-6 CG | Comanche | 2023 | Hudl
The biggest reason I wanted to check out the Moore Super Scrimmage was to see teams that are over 200 miles from me that I might not get the chance to see otherwise. I was not disappointed with Comanche. Miller is an outstanding player. I could see her starring at a D-II school. She works her butt off on both ends of the floor. Hustles all game long and is not shy about doing all of the little things. She is gritty, hits the floor when need be. She isn’t afraid of the one-on-one battle whether it be facing her opponent in the open court as a defender or driving to the basket against the opposing guard. Needless to say, I was thoroughly impressed with her style of play. Coaches, you may want to make a trip to Comanche and get a first-hand look!
Game 2 Standouts: Merritt vs. Lindsey
Jamie Peffer | 5-11 PF | Merritt | 2022 | @JamiePeffer
As soon as I sat down to watch this one, Peffer was a standout in every single way. Merritt’s offense runs like a well-oiled machine and she is a very big part of what they do. Her ability to screen and roll is a huge part of their scheme and could be a huge part of what a college offense is doing come next season. She has tremendous hands down low to receive the hardest of passes into the post and does a great job of finishing strong inside. Jamie plays through contact and hits her free throws when called upon to do so. She is a good defender and uses her size well on the defensive block. Peffer is very physical down low and I love her toughness when fighting for rebounds. She plays for a very good grassroots squad and I honestly can’t believe I haven’t seen her play yet. She has taken visits to D-III schools, though I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see her playing D-II when all is said and done.
Taryn Phillips | 5-5 CG | Lindsay | 2022 | Hudl
Phillips was one of the better point guards that I saw during my time in Moore on Saturday. She definitely plays like a senior in terms of her confidence under pressure. She never got rattled. She split double teams, she handled the ball with precision and she dished passes all over the floor like a surgeon, slicing and dicing the defense. She can score inside with a nice floater. Taryn has good speed but, even better than that, she knows how and when to use it. Some players don’t know how to regulate their speed. They have one speed, all-out, all the time. Phillips instead can dial it up when she needs to blow by a defender, then bring it back down to sit down and wait for the play to develop. She has a high basketball IQ and is most definitely a player who should be on your radar as a college coach.
