Charleston Charter School for Math & Science was the site of one of the weekend's many basketball events happening across South Carolina – the Riptide Pre-Season Tournament.
The home court of the Riptide hosted both girls and boys teams throughout the weekend. Eight girls teams competed, culminating on Sunday afternoon with a third-place game as well as a tourney championship game. As the Sunday slate advanced, the level of play, as expected, rose as well.
Prep Girls Hoops made the trip out to the Lowcountry to take in Sunday's action. Here is a look at sophomores and freshmen who had stellar outings in Charleston.

[player_tooltip player_id="355778" first="Peyton" last="Webb"] – 2024 – Charleston Math & Science – The host school Riptide faced off against Porter-Gaud on Sunday in its Pre-Season Tournament and hoped to get the Cyclones caught up in a tangled basketball Webb. She wears No. 10 and that is probably the number a judge would give her to describe her play. Webb is quick to the rim and on occasions will get bumped by an opponent which will send her to the line for foul shots. She will shoot and drain shots from long range and grab a number of rebounds. Webb finished the Riptide's contest with Porter-Gaud with a seven-point effort.
[player_tooltip player_id='479507' first='Maddy' last='Hawes'] – 2024 – Charleston Collegiate – Hawes had to carry a good bit of the load today for the Sundevils given its thin bench it had today when facing Academic Magnet plus two teammates suffered injuries. She had plenty of occasions where she was Charleston Collegiate's primary ball handler and several of occasions where she played stellar defense. Hawes would guard inbounds passes, come away with steals and grab rebounds. She did all of her scoring in the first and third quarters and concluded the Sundevils' Sunday get-together with the Raptors having scored six points.
Zanyiah Sanders-Smith – 2024 – Military Magnet Academy – If the Eagles' game with Wando to close out the Riptide Pre-Season Tournament had broadcasters, the phrase “Sanders-Smith will head to the line” would have been said a lot with the number of free throws she took. Sanders-Smith was part of the starting five for coach Nathaniel Taylor's defending 1A state champion team and scored seven points with five of those coming courtesy of the charity stripe. Sanders-Smith apparently draws plenty of attention and contact and uses her 5-foot-10 height to make a great deal of plays in the paint.
[player_tooltip player_id='377333' first='Emma' last='Sanders'] – 2025 – Wando HS – The Warriors were shorthanded two of their important players with [player_tooltip player_id="297859" first="Taylor" last="Brown"] not being available and [player_tooltip player_id="124098" first="Dylan" last="Silber"], a preseason Top 5 5A seniors pick, being sidelined for the season with a torn ACL. Sanders, a freshman, stepped up big time in what was a hard-fought championship contest with Military Magnet. Sanders scored early and often as she tallied six of her eventual 10 points in the first quarter – and getting to the free throw line helped Sanders' efforts. She deflected passes on defense, made plays near the rim on offense, used her 6-foot-1 height to her advantage and converted on a number of high-percentage shot opportunities.
[player_tooltip player_id="252502" first="Sabri" last="Mitchell"] – 2025 – Military Magnet Academy – There may be few more classic examples of the “not how you start, but how you finish” type of game than being held off the scoreboard for three stanzas only to score four points in the fourth quarter – and two of those came via a game-winning layup as time expired. That is what happened for the battle-tested Eagles on Sunday afternoon as Mitchell capped a Military Magnet comeback bid over Wando. She also displayed that she will take midrange shots and, as someone who stands at 5-foot-10, can be effective as a shot blocker as well.
[player_tooltip player_id='460544' first='Perry' last='Chambers'] – 2025 – Porter-Gaud HS – Head coach Kevin Ziman's Cyclones are sure to cause havoc for opponents' frontcourt strategies over these next few seasons. Chambers came off the bench for Porter-Gaud and scored at least one basket from the field in every quarter outside of the second frame. She eventually scored eight points in what was an emphatic Cyclones victory over host school Charleston Math & Science – eight points that were a reflection of the depth that coach Ziman's team will field throughout this season. Chambers was the third-leading scorer in the Cyclones game with the Riptide and has also played volleyball during her time at Porter-Gaud.
Evie Walldorf – 2025 – Academic Magnet Academy – Walldorf was in the starting five for coach Stevie Jones' Raptors. One of the attributes she displayed on Sunday afternoon is her ability to be a lockdown defender. Walldorf will give a team a 3-point shooting dimension to an offense in addition to drawing contact and getting to the free throw line. Walldorf got a good bit of playing time – a reflection of coach Jones' confidence in his freshman. She is a transfer to Academic Magnet from Ashley Hall and has also played soccer throughout her athletic career. Walldorf scored seven points against Charleston Collegiate.
