4A basketball is by far the most competitive classification for girls basketball in Washington this year. A handful of teams are legitimate contenders across the state. Two of the top early contenders are Woodinville High School and Issaquah High School who both happen to compete in the KingCo 4A Conference just east of Seattle. Their 7:15pm matchup tonight at Woodinville will be a huge test to see where things stand in the 4A race.
Woodinville has a strong core of players that lead the charge and have some great experience. 2022 6’0 small forward [player_tooltip player_id="156428" first="Tatum" last="Thompson"] is averaging nearly 20 points per game and Woodinville will need the scoring production from her in order to win the state title. The Boise State signee has also been good for 7.5 rebounds, 2 steal and 2 blocks. 2022 5’8 point guard [player_tooltip player_id="27947" first="Veronica" last="Sheffey"] is the head of the snake as the floor general. Sheffey’s matchup with Issaquah’s [player_tooltip player_id="27934" first="Keira" last="Hanson"] will be a major key to this game. 2022 6’2 center [player_tooltip player_id="327838" first="Jacey" last="Eggers"] has been solid for Woodinville this season as a sophomore. She will be another key with her size, inside scoring and rebounding against Issaquah’s fairly tall roster.
Issaquah has a squad that I look forward to seeing in person later on in the year and more than likely, at the state tournament. 2022 5’7 point guard [player_tooltip player_id="27934" first="Keira" last="Hanson"] is the lead guard for Issaquah and the Vermont commit should have a really big year. A lot is on Hanson’s shoulders to make this team go, but the group is well coached and has some surrounding pieces. 2022 5’7 guard [player_tooltip player_id="319096" first="Keira" last="Slippern"] provides some experience in the backcourt and 2025 5’8 guard [player_tooltip player_id="362412" first="Lia" last="Hanson"] is one we will be tracking. Issaquah is off to a 3-0 start including a key win over 3A contender Lake Washington.
