Next to the high school state tournament I don’t know if there’s any better atmosphere than what the Breakdown Tip Off Classic has to offer during the high school season. You typically get the best of the best from teams to players and it’s a day full of players looking to prove that they belong on the big stage with the bright lights. Friday and Saturday were no different. I had my eyes on the underclassman looking to plant their flags and cement themselves on one of the biggest stages of the young season. [player_tooltip player_id="252387" first="Aaliyah" last="Crump"] - Minnetonka 2025 I don’t think anyone with eyes could argue that among the 2025’s that competed in the Breakdown Tip Off Classic, Crump solidified why she sits as the #1 ranked player in the class. Numbers don’t tell the whole story as she only posted 4 points in the game Friday night against Rosemount, but she defended, rebounded and had a handful of assist and hockey assist. She’s playing with 2 D1 commits’ in [player_tooltip player_id="12727" first="Kiani" last="Lockett"] and [player_tooltip player_id="57907" first="Desiree" last="Ware"], so she understands her current role and picks her spots to display her offensive arsenal. Fast forward to Saturday evening against Maple Grove and she was definitely in her bag. Her ball-handling and ability to score has never been questioned, but what really impressed me was her vision and passing ability. One play in particular comes to mind; she grabbed an offensive rebound with her back to the basket and before anyone had a chance to react she threw a no-look bounce pass to [player_tooltip player_id="178260" first="Emma" last="Dasovich"] for a lay-up. I happened to be talking to her dad at the time and he was adamant that she may be as gifted a passer as she is a scorer. Time will tell the story. She tallied a total of 14 points in the game against the Crimson and scored from all 3 levels. Crump has worked extremely hard to get where she is and doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon. [player_tooltip player_id="252379" first="Addison" last="Mack"] - Minnehaha Academy 2025 What a start to the season Mack is having. She’s already dropped a 40 piece and is averaging 28 ppg while getting everyone involved and making it look so easy. At 5’8, and as slight as she is, it’s not supposed to happen like that, but it does and we love it! Saturday afternoon against Albany was no different. She opened up scoring the first 5 points of the game on her way to a game high 26 points. She does it in a variety of ways but that jump shot is her bread and butter. You think you have her contained and splash, another three in your face. She doesn’t celebrate as she’s been there and done that...a lot! [player_tooltip player_id="252381" first="Maddyn" last="Greenway"] - Providence Academy 2026 "Heart over Height"; Greenway is the epitome of that proverb. She got off to a bit of a slow start Saturday against Benilde-St. Margaret, I’ll attribute that to nerves as the house was starting to fill up for the main event to follow. Make no mistake about it, no one left that gym not impressed with the show Greenway put on. For the record, it was most certainly a team effort, but how does someone with the three Counts sisters on the court find a way to grab 10 rebounds!? Well, Greenway did, which means she had a double-double as she also cashed in 18 points. She should’ve been closer to 25 as she missed a few from the charity stripe and a couple of bunnies, but we won’t hold that against her. She stepped up at the end and made the free throws when it mattered most. Greenway controlled tempo, got the ball into the hot hands of her teammates and showed poise you don’t typically see in an 8th grader playing on the big stage. She is as good as advertised and will continue to give teams fits all season long. [player_tooltip player_id="212489" first="Sophie" last="Hawkinson"]- Wayzata 2025 Sophie’s hard work is certainly paying off as through three games the #9 ranked player in the 2025 class is averaging 13 ppg and knocking down 2 threes per game including 4 on opening night. It looks like she’s establishing her role as a knock-down 3-point shooter for Wayzata this year and with all the attention being on Gopher committ [player_tooltip player_id="12715" first="Mara" last="Braun"], she’ll definitely get her fair share of good looks. Friday night in the Breakdown against Becker she showed that she’s not only a 3-point specialist, but that she’s also a lockdown defender and in transition is always looking to push pace. I’m always impressed with Hawkinson’s no nonsense approach to the game. The game got away from Becker early as Hawkinson and company turned up the heat on the defensive end and seemed to be in transition for most of the 1st half. With Sophie coming into her own, Wayzata will once again be knocking on the door at the end the season hoping to step foot into the big dance. Allie Haabala - Alexandria 2025 We love finding new players to show some love to and we’ve certainly found one in Haabala. She stands about 5’7, has a solid build and commanded her team’s offense like she’s been there for years. Playing alongside another high-level prospect in [player_tooltip player_id="346165" first="Hadley" last="Thul"] gives Alexandria a very formidable duo. Haabala continuously weaved through the Hill-Murray defense for either a nice finish at the rim for herself or a quick drop-off to a teammate for a layup attempt. She has a very nice handle and plays with good pace. Defensively against Hill-Murray she was very active getting her hands in the passing lanes and making the Hill-Murray guards work for everything they got. This was a small sample size but she definitely has us wanting more!
