Two of the regions lesser covered teams had the best game of the day. A back-and-forth game with neither team leading by more than five points and both coaches having to make adjustments throughout. The outcome wasn’t decided until the last minute with several players catching our eye in the process. In the end it was Takoma Academy on top 45-40. Here are some of the players who stood out in the game.
Standout players:
Antaneke Cummingham – 5’8″ – Wing – Anacostia – 2024
Antaneke is a pretty good shooter from three, she is athletic and moves well up the floor. She was able to get to the line because of her aggressiveness.
Precious Hill Precious Hill 5'10" | SF Anacostia | 2025 State MD – 5’10″ – Wing – Anacostia – 2025
The Indian’s future is tied in with Precious both short and long term. The freshman may be the best player on the team and with her youth and upside she can potentially be one of the city’s top players. She has a complete game but not yet a master of any one particular skill. She has the foundation in place for a promising career at the divison one college level.
Brooke Scott – 5’2″ – Point Guard – Takoma Academy – 2023
Brooke showed her value from the opening tap as she was essentially the coach on the floor directing teammates to their positions to get the offense started. Anacostia quickly learned that she was the player to stop and put the pressure on her. She handled it well limiting turnovers against double teams and traps and pushing the ball in transition. At 5’2″ she uses her body well drawing contact fouls and has a nice looking shot from the mid-range out to the three. She was able to get to the line and knock down her free throws and secure the win.
LaNayia Jackson – 5’11″ – Wing – Anacostia – 2024
LaNayia rounds off the youth and athleticism that will let Anacostia to a City Title. It may not happen this year but if this group stays together and stays healthy they can definitely win one maybe two championships before graduation. She has a good inside out game and sprints the floor with conviction. She is one to keep an eye on going forward.
Samantha McKenzie – 5’9″ – Center – Takoma Academy – 2024
Playing center and being listed at center 5’9″ McKenzie would be considered undersized for the position. She, however, plays above six feet rebounding and finishing by the basket. She has good hands catching the ball with a body draped over her and gets her shots up quickly to avoid the blocked shot.
Sydnee Hill – 5’1″ – Point Guard – Takoma Academy – 2022
Sydnee was an excellent compliment to Brooke as they were able to share the point guard duties on the floor. At barely 5’1″ she actually made Brooke look kinda tall on the floor. She was a little quicker making it hard for the Indians to trap both players often giving her a straight path up the court and at times right to the basket.
