I’ve compiled a list of four players whose seasons have compiled excellent defensive numbers to start the season. I want to clear this isn’t a top defenders list, just highlighting impressive statistical achievements thus far. I also will continue players’ statistical seasons as the year goes on.
Lily Truchon Lily Truchon 5'11" | PG South Shore | 2023 State WI -5’11 G/F-’23-South Shore: Truchon has continued to stuff stat-sheets at South Shore to begin her season. In just two games, Truchon has 14 steals along with five blocks in those games. Truchon is a big and athletic wing who can defend multiple positions at this level. Although her sample size is much smaller than these other players, her defense for South Shore is game-changing.
Sadie Jarmolowicz Sadie Jarmolowicz 5'9" | CG Freedom | 2023 State WI -5’10 G-’23-Freedom: The junior guard is a two-way playmaker Jarmolowicz is constantly making things happen. In three games, Jarmolowicz has accumulated nine blocks and five steals. Jarmolowicz’s play has been crucial to Freedom’s 3-0 start to the season. The junior’s ability to make plays on and off the ball at both ends of the floor.
Lucy Leininger-5’10 G-’24-Germantown: Leininger is possibly the most important piece to Germantown if they plan on going back to the state title game. With the lack of size Germantown has, Leininger is possibly the best answer to solving that. In all but one of the four games, Leininger has gotten three or more blocks in the game. Leininger’s first season of varsity basketball as a Warhawk, Leininger has a lot to prove. In a few games against quality opponents, the sophomore has been solid.
Madilyn Dogs Madilyn Dogs 6'0" | CG Kewaskum | 2023 State WI -6’0 F-’23-Kewaskum: Dogs has been one of my favorite defenders to watch play. Although I haven’t seen her play in person yet, her defense pops on film. Dogs is constantly causing opposing offenses problems. The junior has a great IQ and reads plays before they happen. It’s not uncommon to see her jump passing lanes with perfect timing or to get a deflection. She’s also an incredible athlete. Dogs can guard almost anyone with her size and athleticism. Along the lines of versatility, Dogs’ ability to play as a forward and guard translates to the other side of the floor as well. Dogs can turn defense into offense in an instant. The junior’s ability to grab and go off a rebound or control loose balls can be game-changing.
