Continue ReadingMany point guards have made early-season statements with their play. There are a lot of players who are worthy of being named on this list. However, I’m going to cut that list down to four. These four have numbers that have impressed me, along with helping their team win games. This list is in no particular order, nor is this a ranking of any kind. I also will be doing another one of these in a month.
Tieryn Plasch Tieryn Plasch 5'7" | CG Northwestern | 2023 State WI -5’7 G-’23-Northwestern: After seeing Plasch play at the Top 250 Expo, I realized she is one of the most consistent players I’ve seen. Before even looking at her stats this year, I could’ve guessed about 20 points around five rebounds and six assists. I was almost right. Plasch is so dangerous as a lead guard because she can make any pass or shot. In pick and rolls, Plasch can make good things happen.
Abby Thompson Abby Thompson 5'6" | CG Blair- Taylor | 2023 WI -5’6 G-’23-Blair-Taylor: Thompson is one half of, possibly, the best small school backcourt in the state. Thompson is excellent at the point of attack on both ends of the floor. This season Thompson has over seven steals and over six assists per game. Her two-way ability at this level is phenomenal could see Blair-Taylor to Green Bay this season.
Shae Kelley Shae Kelley 5'9" | PG Brookfield East | 2024 State WI -5’9 G-’24-Brookfield East: Kelley is one of the better defensive guards in the state, and she has shown why with her performance this season. Kelley has been able to get teammates involved effectively with over six assists per game. Her size as a guard is helpful for the sophomore to see over smaller defenders. That size also comes in handy on the defensive end. Kelley has averaged five steals in four games this season.
Addy Verhagen-5’4 G-’25-Sheboygan Lutheran: I have not heard of Verhagen before putting this list together, but I am well aware of her now. The freshman has exploded onto the prep scene her freshmen season. She has scored an efficient 20 points on average in her first five games. I’ve been more impressed by is her assist numbers and her ability to get her teammates involved. So far, the freshman has averaged eight assists per game, which is one of the best in the state. Verhagen has been effective guarding opposing point guards as well. The freshman has accumulated seven steals per game to add to the impressive freshman campaign. Her best game thus far is a 25 point 12 assist and 10 steal triple-double.
