For the most part, the start and end of last season weren’t too bad as Washington Township went 4-2 in the first four and last two games of the spring.
In the middle of that was a 1-6 stretch that included three losses of 10 points or less and five losses of 15 points or less.
The Minutemaids kept it close but couldn’t pull it off in the end. That leads us into this season, one where this program is looking to leave the spring in the rearview mirror.
Unfortunately, it will have to come without last season’s top two scorers, but Washington Township has the personnel to do it.
Prep Girls Hoops New Jersey continues its season preview series with a look at Washington Township, a team currently in limbo who is looking to stabilize in the always competitive Olympic Conference.
The main focus on this season’s team is a pair of seniors, Marissa Lucca and Cierra Pinckney, who were starters last season.
Combined, the two averaged around 10.5 PPG in the spring and were good complimentary players in the starting lineup. However, those two haven’t yet reached their collective best with Washington Township.
Lucca will be one of the main guards on this team and Pinckney looks to dominate in the paint as a forward. Both showed glimpses of greatness last season and hopefully, they used the summer to work on their craft on the court in order to break out in their senior seasons.
There are a few new names on this season’s roster, including juniors Ava Graves and Olivia Wisor, both in their first seasons with the Minutemaids.
In what’s expected to be an upperclass-heavy roster, those two will need to step almost immediately into big roles on this team.
That also goes for senior Brianna Sudler, who was relatively quiet in the spring, playing in just on game on varsity. The roster shakeup has given her the opportunity to secure a starting spot and more playing time and that should translate into a productive senior year.
Junior Jill Scardigli is another name to keep a close eye on as she also had limited playing time in the spring, but should see much more of the floor and contribute meaningful minutes for the Minutemaids this season.
A lot is up in the air for Washington Township this winter, with new names coming in and others stepping up into major roles. While there are questions to be answered, this team hopes to get back to .500 basketball to build the program toward the future, and they have the pieces to do it.
