As we head into the new year, several teams in the 5A Class have gotten off to a great start as we head into the mid-way point of the regular season. These 10 teams have the best win-loss records in the 5A Class.
<span style="text-decoration: underline;">Farmington</span> 10-0 (District 2 Leader)
The Farmington Scorpions are having an excellent season so far and currently have the best record in the 5A Class this season. They are undefeated at 10-0 and have had some quality wins vs some of the other top 5A teams this season. They defeated Organ Mountain 64-55 December 9th, defeated Las Cruces 64-46 December 11th and defeated Hobbs in a tournament 61-57 this past Wednesday December 29th. This team is led by [player_tooltip player_id="353690" first="Kiiyani" last="Anitielu"] who is one of the state’s leading scorers and top players. [player_tooltip player_id="353768" first="Audrey" last="Henderson"] is the team’s second leading scorer and is one of their more consistent players this season. [player_tooltip player_id="353913" first="Kamalani" last="Anitielu"] is also making a huge impact as the team’s third leading scorer this season.
<span style="text-decoration: underline;">Volcano Vista</span> 7-0 (District 1 Leader)
The 5A 2021 defending state champions have picked up where they left off from last season. This season, in every win they have won by at least 20 points. They have two wins vs a really good La Cueva team and recently defeated Sandia who is 7-1 this season. They are led by [player_tooltip player_id="353694" first="Natalia" last="Chavez"] who is averaging 16.3 points per game which leads Volcano Vista in scoring. This roster is deep and has balanced scoring from top to bottom. Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="357657" first="Taejhuan" last="Hill"] is averaging 13 points per game and 8.6 rebounds this season and has taken her game to another level this year. Point Guard [player_tooltip player_id="353693" first="Jaelyn" last="Bates"] is averaging 11.6 points per game and remains as one of the state’s top shooters and passers in the game. [player_tooltip player_id="353903" first="Angelyn" last="Aranda"] gives this team size with her rebounding and shot blocking around the basket. Guard [player_tooltip player_id="353770" first="Kennedy" last="Brown"] also brings toughness and grit to this team doing all of the little things that helps teams win games.
<span style="text-decoration: underline;">Gadsden</span> 11-1 (District 3 Leader)
The Gadsden Panthers are 11-1 so far this season which is the most wins in the state right now and they currently own the third best overall record in terms of winning percentage. They also have the best record in 5A District 3 this season. They have had some quality wins this season vs Mayfield and Highland. They also won the championship vs Santa Teresa in their in-season tournament. This squad is led by Senior captain Stephanie Sanchez and Junior [player_tooltip player_id="353923" first="Ema" last="Rose"].
<span style="text-decoration: underline;">Sandia</span> 7-1 (District 2)
The Sandia Matadors have a young team on the rise and is one of New Mexico’s most underrated teams. They own a 7-1 record and their only loss this season came against Volcano Vista the defending 5A champions. Their top three scorers are all freshman that are having a strong impact right away. Freshman Sydney Benally is averaging 14.9 points per game and leads the Matadors in scoring which is 12th in NM. Freshman Hope Giddings is their second leading scorer averaging 12.4 points per game. Then their third leading scorer is Audrianna Wright who is averaging about 10 points per game this season. Senior [player_tooltip player_id="353766" first="Mariah" last="Maes"] is their leader and has much needed experience playing on the varsity level for several years.
<span style="text-decoration: underline;">Clovis</span> 11-3 (District 4 Leader)
The Clovis Wildcats are having an excellent season so far with their 11-3 record. Their three losses this season have come against some really good teams in the 5A Class. Their losses came against Cleveland, Santa Fe and Mayfield. They are led by Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="357695" first="Zarai" last="Lewis"] and Senior Yvonne Fuerte. [player_tooltip player_id="357695" first="Zarai" last="Lewis"] leads the team in scoring averaging 11.6 points per game and Yvonne Fuerte averaging 10.3 points per game.
<span style="text-decoration: underline;">Organ Mountain</span> 9-3 (District 3)
The Organ Mountain Knights have had one of the tougher schedules to open the season and they still find themselves with an impressive 9-3 record this season. They have strong wins vs Carlsbad, La Cueva and a team from Texas this season. Their three losses came against some of the other best teams in 5A. Those losses came against Farmington who is undefeated, Clevland and Clovis. They are led by Harmanie Dominguez who is averaging 18.0 points per game which is currently the 5th most in NM this year. Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="357674" first="Hailey" last="Hernandez"] is the team’s second leading scorer at 10 points per game.
<span style="text-decoration: underline;">Piedra Vista</span> 8-3 (District 2)
The Piedra Vista Panthers are 8-3 this season and have one of the best teams in 5A. They are led by senior [player_tooltip player_id="353695" first="Lanae" last="Billy"] who is averaging 17.8 points per game which ranks 6th in New Mexico this year. [player_tooltip player_id="353750" first="Adreanna" last="Eaton"] is averaging close to a double-double with 10.4 points per game and 7.2 rebounds per game which is in the top 10 in New Mexico. They are also getting a big contribution from Doniah Gruber who is averaging 8.9 points per game and 7.0 rebounds per game.
<span style="text-decoration: underline;">Carlsbad</span> 8-3 (District 4)
The Carlsbad Cavemen have had a solid season through the first 11 games posting an 8-3 record. They lost one of their games 38-37 to Organ Mountain who is 9-3 this year and another game to Centennial 35-30 who is 7-5. They had a quality win vs Las Cruces by defeating them 49-34. They are led by Allie Myers, Morgan Boatwright, Dominique Chacon and Alexa Dugan.
<span style="text-decoration: underline;">Cleveland</span> 8-4 (District 1)
Clevland Storm girls basketball is 8-4 this season so far and has had a tough schedule to start this year. They already participate in one of the toughest districts in New Mexico and they have held their own to start the 2021-22 campaign. They lost 53-41 vs Las Cruces who are one of the top teams in 5A and have defeated some of the other top teams. They defeated Clovis 55-45 November 23rd, defeated Organ Mountain 66-64 on December 11th and defeated Santa Fe 45-31 on December 11th. They are led by [player_tooltip player_id="353780" first="Angelique" last="Abeyta"] and [player_tooltip player_id="353897" first="Allyson" last="Frank"].
<u>Las Cruces</u> 8-4 (District 3)
The Las Cruces Bulldawgs are currently 8-4 this season and have been one of the most consistent teams this year. During one of their in-season tournaments they defeated Cleveland along the way 54-35 on December 9th. They got to the championship game vs Farmington but lost 64-46 to the undefeated Scorpions. They lost to another really good Carlsbad team 49-34. They recently beat the Cleveland Storm for a second time this season 53-41 on December 18th. They are led by [player_tooltip player_id="353927" first="Emma" last="Christiano"] who is averaging 16.5 points per game this season which ranks 7th in New Mexico. Lila Ashida is the team second leading scorer averaging 11.9 points per game this season.
