I find it valuable to look into where these athletes use their talents outside of basketball. What they do on the floor is the most important thing, but there is some value in seeing other areas they excel in.
Kate Fitzgerald-5’8 G-’22-Mosinee: Fitzgerald on the floor causes chaos, especially in a full-court press for her Mosinee team. Fitzgerald is also leading her team in scoring at 14.2 points per game. She’s led her team to a 10-0 record thus far this season. Fitzgerald also has a burst of speed that she uses, albeit in short bursts. That speed has been clear on the track. The senior last season came in second in Division 2’s 200-meter final.
Eliana Sheplee-5’9 G-’24-Rice Lake: Sheplee is one of the best athletes this state has to offer. The sophomore began her season this year by putting up 37 points. Six days after that game, she received her first Division 1 offer from North Dakota. The Warrior also can explode off the ground then float in the air. Sheplee’s jumping ability is on show in the fall when she’s playing volleyball, where she looks like she gets higher than anyone she plays. As a freshman Sheplee also won the state title in the 400-meter dash.
Kyla Saleh-5’10 G/F-’23-Waunakee: I first watched Saleh play at the Kettle Moraine showcase against Pius. Before I even knew her background, I noted that she’s an incredible leaper. Her leaping ability helps her earn steals when opposing players try to pass over her. Her athleticism is also very helpful when she has to defend multiple positions. Saleh also has good defensive instincts that she uses to jump passing lanes. Last spring Saleh was the state high jump champion as a sophomore, which after seeing her play basketball, I find obvious.
Mahra Wieman Mahra Wieman 5'10" | CG Reedburg | 2022 State WI -5’10 G/F-’22-Reedsburg: Wieman is one of the best three-level scorers in the state. That level of success isn’t a new thing either she’s been awesome the last three and a half years at Reedsburg. Wieman recently became the Beavers’ all-time leading scorer and has a little over half a season and postseason to extend that record. Her dominance athletically extends beyond basketball. Last fall, her sister Macie and herself were the team leaders in blocks and kills on a team that made it to the state semifinals. The main point I’m getting at is wherever Mahra goes next year success will likely follow.
