We’re entering the road to the stretch run before the postseason, the perfect time to discuss this season’s stock risers. Here are some 2024 stock risers in the Skyland Conference, the first of a three-part series.
Iyanna Cotten – G, Franklin
Cotton has become a known three-point shooting commodity for Franklin and has gone from a bench presence to a must-start player this season. She’s approached her offensive game with more intensity and has tweaked minor things to allow for better dribble drives in the lane and more consistent scoring opportunities. What makes her more effective is separation on the wing to shoot the three, which she creates from great off-ball movement. The more and more she continues that, the better she’s going to be.
Jennah Johnson – 5-9 SG, Gill St. Bernard’s
Johnson is very involved on both sides of the ball and has shown a great ability to adapt on the fly for Gill St. Bernard’s. We’ve seen that in a big way this season as a more playing time has given her the ability to develop and improve her shot-blocking ability and passing game while continuing to be a force from the perimeter. Arguably the most impressive part of her game is how she does the little things well, like exploiting mismatches on the floor and surveying to find more opportunities for her and her teammates.
Brooke Cooper – SG, Bound Brook
Cooper is a tremendous three-point shooter with a great shooting touch and a smooth release. We saw little of what she could do on the high school level last season, but she’s blossomed in a big way for Bound Brook. she’s a spot-up shooter and moves well off-ball to get open. Whether on the wing or from the top of the key, Cooper has expansive perimeter range. She’s just finding her touch and has been knocking down shots consistently throughout the year.
Emma Landes – SF, Ridge
Landes has become the main forward option for Ridge this season and she’s taken full advantage of the additional playing time. Her operates mainly in the paint and she’s found a recipe for success thus far. Landes is an agile forward, moving around well in the paint. She’s really improved her court awareness, which has given her more opportunities to score. That’s helped out with her overall strength too as she’s been more active on the glass, meaning she’s boxing out more often and separating opponents to haul in more rebounds.
Jaelyn Morris – G/F, Warren Hills
Morris has found a perfect niche for herself at Warren Hills and has quickly shown her worth as a scorer. She has a near-complete offensive game already, but still is more effective when she drives toward the basket. She’s gained a much greater deal of confidence as she’s picked off passes on defense or made tough shots on offense from creating space inside the arc. That shot creation has come much more natural to her and it’s shown its worth in a big way this season.
Sophia Larsen – 5-5 PG/SG, Bound Brook
Larsen has found a great deal of success from the perimeter and it’s helped fuel the rest of her game. She combines a great three-point shot with an equally good inside game and her three-point shooting gives her more space to operate on the floor. She’s as much of a facilitator as she is a scorer, which adds another dimension to her game. Larsen works best on the break and on an up-tempo offense as she’s found ways to create multiple turnovers a game and outlet passes to open teammates down the floor.
