Last two minutes of a game, how many times are you going to the line? Make or miss? Win or Lose? Free-throws often make the difference! I bet a few state playoff games come down to this factor come March.
Let’s look at some of South Florida’s best...
[player_tooltip player_id="154898" first="Ashley" last="Thornton"] - Seminole Ridge
Find me a better percentage free-throw shooter in Florida than [player_tooltip player_id="154898" first="Ashley" last="Thornton"]. As of now, there is none. The 5-foot-5 prospect is 34-of-37 (92 percent) from the line. Thornton went 14-of-15 against Freedom and 12-of-12 against King’s Academy. Both of those were wins and the Lady Hawks are 8-0 overall. Thornton is the type of player you want on the line during playoff time.
[player_tooltip player_id="219924" first="Khadee" last="Hession"] - Mater Lakes Academy
2024 [player_tooltip player_id="219924" first="Khadee" last="Hession"] is a fantastic guard for the Lady Bears. The 5-foot-10 guard is 30-of-39 (77 percent) from the line. She went 8-of-9 against Jones and Miami SLAM. An off game or two is the only reason her percentage isn’t way above 80 percent. Given her athleticism and length, Hession should live at the line when she is not converting.
[player_tooltip player_id="331716" first="Julia" last="Vazquez"] - Cardinal Newman
2025 [player_tooltip player_id="331716" first="Julia" last="Vazquez"] has a senior mentality on the line. The 5-foot-6 guard is 28-of-37 (76 percent) from the stripe. She went a perfect 7-of-7 against Armwood and 6-of-6 against Southeast. A little more volume/repetitions and Vazquez should be well into the 80’s. A solid number as of now for a freshman.
[player_tooltip player_id="244203" first="Emoriah" last="Mchenry"] - Miami Norland
2022 [player_tooltip player_id="244203" first="Emoriah" last="Mchenry"] has been pretty good at the line for the Lady Vikings. The 5-foot-9 guard/forward has six games at 75 percent or better from the line. McHenry has improved her mark in every season. She was 56 percent as as sophomore and 63 percent as a freshman. Now, McHenry is hovering around 80 percent. Credit to any work she has done for improving her mark.
