In this edition of Orlando Area Headliners, we have the Horizon Hawks. With a quick drive to the southwestern corner of Orlando, you find Horizon High School, in Winter Garden Florida. Horizon High School is in its inaugural year as a school. They are coached by long time basketball coach D’uane Howard. They currently sit at 10-10 on the season, with big wins versus Boone and Freedom. They start the district playoffs this coming week versus Pine Ridge. The team, because they are a first-year school, do not have any seniors. I had a chance to see the Hawks play and here are a few players that caught my eye.
Mollie Smith 2024 5’4” PG
Smith, one of the two sophomores on the squad, is the leading scorer for the Hawks. She is dropping 15.6 points per game. A crafty lefty that gets to the basket with various moves, including a smooth inside out attack. Smith, with the ability to finish with the euro-step, jump stop and other creative moves, constantly gets to the free throw line. With the ability to knock down the three ball and stop on a dime to hit the mid-range jump shot.
Sofia Duque 2025 PG
One of the four freshman on the young Hawks team. The freshman starter Duque has a quick release jump shot. She is averaging 10.1 points per game on the guard heavy team. With some additional time and reps, Duque will build confidence and has the potential to be even more deadly shooter for the team.
Amya Mitchell 2025 5’9” PF
A lanky freshman that comes off the bench for the Hawks. Mitchell, a tall player that makes good, solid, on-target passes. She can bring the ball up the court and handle the pressure of the defense, while scanning the floor. Mitchell, a very good rebounder. She also has a nice-looking jump shot, when open she is not afraid to shoot a mid-range jumper, Mitchell is scoring 5.5 points per game.
Sienna Astorino 2025 5’3” PG
She is the Point Guard for the Hawks, a small guard that plays with tons of heart. A gritty defender that reads the passing lane and applies tough on the ball pressure. Controlling the flow of the game, calling the offensive plays, all while distributing the ball to the open teammates. Astorino, with the ability to knock down the outside jump shot, she also pushes the ball on the break.
