The schools up there can easily be forgotten when thinking about where high-end talent originates. I think the four players I want to highlight will play at the next level and are likely better than most people think. These players aren’t in any particular order.
Tieryn Plasch Tieryn Plasch 5'7" | CG Northwestern | 2023 State WI -5’7 G-’23-Northwestern
When it comes to listing efficient scorers in Wisconsin, Plasch is near the top of that list. The most impressive part about the junior is how well she shoots off the dribble. The move that seems to get Plasch the most space is a right to left crossover followed by a step back. The Northwestern guard has a great understanding of how to make defenders move. I watched one of Plasch’s games for the first time last night against St. Croix Falls. In that game, Plasch showed why she’s an elite scorer. Plasch scored 28 points against the Saints and forced the Saints to send multiple bodies to keep her out of her rhythm. Plasch’s scoring ability is on par with anyone in the state, in my opinion.
Lily Truchon Lily Truchon 5'11" | PG South Shore | 2023 State WI -5’11 G/F-’23-South Shore
In three of the last four South Shore games, Truchon has scored at least 32 points. The South Shore junior has shown that she’s capable of elevating her team. Even though I led with her scoring ability, the Cardinal can create for her teammates as well. In my opinion, Truchon is at her most dangerous when she has the ball in transition. Most kids aren’t used to a 5-foot-11 guard running full speed at them. Even if defenders are ready for a charging Truchon, they likely aren’t prepared for a lethal euro step that the Cardinal can execute. The beauty of the junior’s game is that she is as dangerous with her back to the basket as she is facilitating on the perimeter. There is no point in time where Truchon doesn’t pose a threat.
Emily Montgomery-5’9 G-’24-South Shore
I haven’t talked about Montgomery before, but I have noticed the performances she’s put in over the last few months. Montgomery has been consistent, along with Truchon, making the Cardinals one of the most talented teams in Division 5. There is a lot to improve for Montgomery before she gets to the next level, but it’s clear she has that kind of talent. Montgomery is a good athlete who has made over half of her shots this season. The guard will develop with Team Wisconsin and could become an intriguing prospect.
Kelsey Cooper Kelsey Cooper 6'1" | C St. Croix | 2024 State WI -6’0 F-’24-St. Croix Falls
Cooper knows how to play big. She keeps the ball high and rebounds her area well. I also noticed how good of a passer Cooper is. Because of the attention, Cooper draws she is constantly looking for open teammates. The sophomore isn’t afraid to whip a cross-court pass either. If there’s one thing I’d like to see Cooper improve, it’s her shooting. I don’t need to see her hit 3-pointers. I would like to see her be better around the rim and improve her free-throw percentage to make her impossible to defend at this level. If she figures out that aspect of her game, Cooper could become one of the best players in the region by a wide margin.
