When you sat and watched the games and saw the ability of numerous players on one team and what they had the potential to do on the court, you asked yourself how do the coaches keep everyone happy with one ball. Well, the answer is found in one place: the players at the PG position. These players are often known as floor generals. Let’s take a look at a few who were their team’s captain at the Rumble…
Hunter Thompson (Point Guard)
School: MRA

Twitter: N/A
Hunter was one of the most complete PGs at the Rumble. Facilitating was definitely the strength of her game. She is fundamentally sound and a trusted player with the ball in her hands and the offense in her control. She plays at a nice pace, and she knows how to get the ball to the playmakers on her squad. She played under control while pushing the rock in transition.
She was looking to force tempo throughout the contest and knew when to get her team out and running.
She has good vision in both the open court and half-court as she dropped dimes throughout the contest. Hunter’s overall game is a mature and solid one. She is not going to be flashy with the rock but is going to be efficient, productive, and impactful. Her stat line against Noxubee was 2pts (1-2, 50%) and 6-assist.
Jamyiyah Cotten (Point Guard)
School: Madison Central
Instagram: N/A
Twitter: N/A
JC was one of the most exciting players during the Rumble. She is small in size but plays big. She is everything that a coach looks for in a floor general. She was patient with the rock in her hands, understood what her team needed at different times of the game, got the rock to the hot hand, and basically was the coach on the floor for Madison Central. She shot the rock well, got to the cup, and had one of the best assist to turnover ratios of any PG the entire day.
I loved JC’s game because of how much fun she seemed to be having while on the court.
Her swag and confident play were contagious, and her teammates fed off her. She has vision and accuracy and was dropping dimes on time and on target. She brings a lot to the game and will definitely be a key factor for Madison Central’s playoff run. Her stat line against Ridgeland was 12pts (5-10, 50%), Assist to Turnover Ratio: 5 to 1.
Syria Walker (Point Guard)
School: Meridian HS
Instagram: N/A
Twitter: N/A
Meridian is loaded with talent, and Syria did a fantastic job facilitating her squad. She is dependable with the rock in her hand as Meridian had no trouble getting into what they desired with Syria running the show. She is a shifty PG with handles that is a difficult cover. The ability to beat her defender off the bounce does not push Syria to get away from her role for her team.
She keeps things flowing and keeps scorers happy.
Even though the stat line does not show it, Syria impacted the game in numerous ways on both ends of the court in which all of the ways did not show up in the stat line. Meridian is loaded, has good coaching, and should make noise in the post-season. Syria’s stat line was 2pts (1-3, 33%)
Leah Sutton (5’6/Point Guard/2023)
School: Raymond HS
Instagram: _leahhhs._
Twitter: @leahsutton23
Lead poured in a double-double from the PG spot as her stat line was as follows: 11pts (3-8, 38%) 10rebs, Assist to Turnover Ratio: 3 to 5. The assist to turnover ratio has to improve as she will be a key piece to Raymond’s post-season success. Leah showed tools that you look for in a PG, as she can handle the rock, has a nice hesi move that kept defenders off balance, and when she got into the paint, she displayed a nice floater game.
She has a balance between scoring and facilitating and did both exceptional well against Brandon HS.
She knows how to create the table of opportunity for her teammates, and she knows how to serve them the rock in a position where they can score the rock. With another year in store, I will be interested in seeing her in 365 days.
Marley Freeman (5’8/Point Guard/2022)
School: Brandon HS
Instagram: iam.marleyy
Twitter: @marleyfreeman10
Marley has good size at the PG position and was the hands that Brandon’s offense flowed thru. She has a mature and balanced game, and her presence and senior leadership was a stabilizing force for her squad. You could tell that she was the alpha female on her team, and even though she did not put up a lot of numbers in the scoring column, nor did she shoot the ball well, she was definitely the engine that kept Brandon on track. She impacted the game in so many ways other than scoring the rock.
She created off the bounce, got Brandon in their sets, and was a vocal leader throughout the contest.
She was solid on both ends of the floor, and her presence on the court was key. She has to focus on taking care of the ball better going down the stretch because 7-turnovers are too much for the primary ballhandler. Brandon’s post-season play is hinged upon this floor general, and we will see how it plays out. Marley’s stat line from the game against Raymond was 4pts (1-5, 20%, all from behind the arc) Assist to Turnover Ratio: 5 to 7.
