In my opinion, championships are won with wings. The ability of two-way wings to constantly affect every possession is a trait that makes good players great. In the sophomore class, plenty of players on the wing are talented, but I want to highlight these four. The players listed arent in any particular order.
Ava Brandenburg Ava Brandenburg 5'10" | CG Evansville | 2024 State WI -5’11 G/F-Evansville: Brandenburg will make any team she plays on better. The Blue Devil plays with versatility and can make difficult shots look simple. There aren’t many players in Wisconsin that I can say can play well out of the post, shoot with range, make a play in isolation, and knockdown moving jumpers off the dribble. In a postseason game, Brandenburg can pose questions a higher seed may not be able to answer. I’m a massive fan of Brandenburg’s ability on the offensive end, and her size and mobility make her an intriguing long-term defensive prospect as well.
Lindsey Schadewalt Lindsey Schadewalt 5'10" | SG New Glarus | 2024 State WI -5’11 G-New Glarus: The ceiling for Schadewalt is one of the highest in the class. As an off-ball guard, there are signs that Schadewalt has a chance to be a special player. Defensively, the Glarner Knight is fine as she is right now for this level, but if she can work on her lateral quickness, she can be an elite defender. Offensively is where Schadewalt could become special. Efficiency wise there are some questions at this moment if she can truly handle a large usage percentage. However, I see the outline of a player who can become one of the best players in the 2024 class. The ability to score in the mid-range area in multiple ways, the high release on her jumper and the touch she has have given me hope that she could be special.
Eliana Sheplee-5’10 G-Rice Lake: Sheplee is one of the best athletes in the state full stop. There is still some refining Sheplee needs to do, but there is a shot she can play three different sports at the next level. Outside of full games I’ve seen her play on stream, I found myself watching her volleyball film. I can’t stress enough the sophomore explodes off the ground. There is no other way to put it. In basketball, you hardly ever get the opportunity to gather as you do in volleyball. However, she has one of the highest leaps on a jump shot. That jumper helped her score 37 points on the opening night. I’m very excited to see how her game grows over the next two and a half years.
Carly Drew Carly Drew 5'8" | CG Westfield | 2024 State WI -5’8 G-Westfield: Numbers-wise, there isn’t much information about Drew outside of her overall counting stats. Luckily there is more than enough video of her. Drew can affect the game at a high level offensively. She handles the ball well and pairing that with her ability to score at all levels makes her an excellent scoring wing. Although there isn’t a lot to go off of, the threats Drew poses on the wing make her one of the most dangerous wings in Wisconsin. Drew also seems to find ways to get her hands on the ball most of the time. She leads her team in steals, pulls down over five rebounds per game, earns over three assists per game, and scores over 19 points per game to boot.
