<span style="font-size: 14pt"><strong>2023 Rankings Update: 6 Wings You Never Heard Of</strong></span>
Despite the nationwide shortage of wings, Maryland has an abundance of them, especially in the 2023 class. There are quite a few that we are all familiar with, however, there are several that no one outside of the die hard fanatics have heard of. Many of these players will fly under the radar because their school doesn't play a national schedule. Here are six wings that made a splash in the <a href="https://prepgirlshoops.com/maryland/rankings/2023-rankings/">2023 rankings</a> that most people don't know.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="163864" first="Gabrielle" last="Kennerly"] - 5'10" - Howard</strong>
<img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-384860" src="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/pgh/uploads/2022/02/DSC_0007-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" />
Gabrielle has high major level talent and is currently ranked #10 overall in the 2023 class. She has great elevation on her pull up in the lane and has the capability to play any of the perimeter positions. Howard doesn't play a national schedule so she can be a big time under the radar find for a power five program.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="142844" first="Mehkia" last="Chase"] - 5'9" - St. Mary's Ryken</strong>
<img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-384834" src="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/pgh/uploads/2022/02/DSC_0111-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" />
Mehkia exploded when the lights where on her during the Public vs Private School Challenge. Ryken is in the WCAC technically, however, being deep in St. Mary's County it's a planned road trip even for teams in their conference. Chase is a physical wing that can open the floor from beyond the arc.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="389451" first="Gabby" last="Smelcer"] - 5'9" - Concordia Prep</strong>
<img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-384788" src="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/pgh/uploads/2022/02/DSC_0008-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" />
Gabby has a smooth game and a nice release on her shot. She is a glue type player that doesn't look to break away from the offensive scheme, this makes her dependable as well as predictable. She is a good finisher making the shots that she should and has precision passing and movement without the ball. She is a player with good size that can fit in on any college system.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="319248" first="Tayla" last="Perry"] - 6'1" - Riverdale Baptist School</strong>
Tayla is long and athletic with a huge upside. She has an incredible wingspan that covers a lot of real estate. She is improving her skill level under Shawn Wright and if it comes together and adding a little physicality she can rise to a top 10 player in her senior season. Genetically she has gifts that can't be taught.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="142837" first="Maria" last="Alvarado"] - 5'11" - Georgetown Visitation</strong>
Maria is a consistent shooter and defender, she has a nice transition pull up shot. She is a complementary player that can fill multiple roles at the next level. To be a primary option she would need to add more aggression or have the offense ran around her but, being a consistent threat in any situation seems to be where her value is set.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="389434" first="Maggie" last="O'Boyle"] - 5'9" - Holy Child</strong>
<img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-366937" src="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/pgh/uploads/2021/12/DSC_0054-scaled-crop-2049x1345-1640035629-300x197.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="197" />
Maggie has a picturesque shot and a very quick release. She is able to get off her shot despite the close out but, when covered opts to pass out. Creating shots off the bounce and using fakes to beat defenders would be the progression I'd like to see in her senior season. There is always a need for shooters so she should be able to find a fit at the next level.
