CVU was in control most the game, but that being said, Colchester had their runs and hung around until the 3rd quarter, where CVU took over with a 22-7 3Q run. CVU’s dynamic core held strong to advance to the semifinals, which will be hosted at University of Vermont’s Patrick Gym next week.
Player of the Game:
Shelby Companion, G 5’9 – CVU Class of ’23
Companion played calm and collected tonight, leading #2 seed CVU with 16pts, mainly off threes and transition finishes. She also collected three steals due to great anticipation off-ball in CVU’s zone press. Moreover, dished out a cool five assists as she drew defenders with her dribble drive and offered up great drop passes in the lane. CVU didn’t have great offensive flow, but Shelby was able to spark the offense with her pesky defense and savvy ball movement. I anticipate another standout game from the junior as they head to the semifinals.
Champlain Valley Union High School:
Elise Berger, G/F 5’10 – CVU Class of ’24
Elise contributed seven points to the CVU effort, but mostly she played orchestrator for the Redhawks. She is one of CVU’s many ballhandlers, and she pushes the ball well off of rebounds. When the transition basket wasn’t there, she set up the offense and kept things rolling. If she develops more of a scoring mindset, opposing teams will have their hands full trying to decide who to lock in on.
Addi Hunter, F 5’10 – CVU Class of ’23
Addi had a solid performance as she collected rebounds, clogged the lane and played a nice high-low post game. She’s relentless on the glass and a savvy inside passer, leading to offensive boards and numerous second chance points, whether off her own make or off a dish to a fellow big. Hunter hit her mid-range looks and moved the ball when the shot wasn’t there. I anticipate she’ll be even more aggressive as they take the big stage in the semis next week.
Colchester High School:
Meghan Thompson, G 5’8 – CHS Class of ’25
Thompson had her shot sighted in once she stepped in CVU’s building! She put in a highly efficient 22 points with five threes and an array of dribble drives, featuring floaters and lay-ins against CVU’s bigs. The freshman played fearless against a daunting second round opponent and played nearly the entire game due to a short bench. With time to develop her handle and athleticism, Thompson may be a mainstay.
Nicole Norton, G 5’9 – CHS Class of ’24
Nicole is a lengthy wing who doesn’t mind handling the ball too. She navigated CVU’s pressure zone defense well with sound footwork and crisp passes. With such length, she can slide right to the basket off one dribble, and she isn’t afraid to go up among the trees once she’s in the lane. Norton’s free throws were all nylon, even after playing nearly the entire game. She’s got a nice shot and doesn’t force it, however, her slashing opened up some outside looks and she sank a couple threes due to the space. She rebounded well out of CHS’ zone and got them into their sets. Norton is another young starter with time to build her repertoire.
Ryleigh Garrow, G 5’9 – CHS class of ’23
Ryleigh is CHS’ primary ballhandler, a tough guard with great length. She got herself into a few tight corners against CVU’s zone pressure, but she always seemed to find a way out, whether it was with a pass or a tough turn-and-go around the corner. She slashes well and with her length she can surprise defenders with how quick she gets to her spot. Defensively, she had numerous pass deflections and played near 30 minutes of a 32-minute contest. I’ll be excited to see Ryleigh and CHS bounce back next year with this experience under their belt.
