We’ve gotten to see some great basketball played over the last week starting with the quarterfinals on Friday and Saturday. Here are some players that caught our eye through the last week of games.
Ava Mazur (So.) – SG, Mainland
Mazur had herself a game in the semifinals against Atlantic City to send Mainland to the CAL tourney final. She’s been one of the go-to leaders this team as a sophomore as she’s evolved her offensive game tremendously. Mazur shoots the ball well from beyond the arc, with a quick, easy release. She’s not one who forces shots, but creates her own shot. Her defense has taken a step up throughout the season, closing in on defenders and trailing back well off-ball to cause turnovers if the opportunity presents itself. The more Mazur can keep her confidence on the floor, the more success that will come her way.
Sabrina Little (Fr.) – PG/SG, Holy Spirit
Little is an ever-evolving combo guard who can shoot from deep and can find success when driving into the lane. She has fantastic handles for a freshman, which has given Holy Spirit confidence to allow her to run the point and flourish as a guard. She plays with a level of intensity that shows she wants the ball in her hands come crunch time. Despite a loss to Atlantic City in the quarters, Little had a career day and shot well from the field, especially from three. She was electric and agile on the floor, but had such a soft touch with her shot. Little knows the game well and plays with her heart on her sleeve, pushing Holy Spirit in a good direction moving forward.
Kara Wilson (Jr.) – G/F, Egg Harbor Township
For the first time in her career, Wilson has been able to consistently produce as a starter, vastly improving on her overall game. She’s proven to be a reliable scorer inside the perimeter, finding that open space well to operate in. Wilson can rebound the ball well when near the rim, boxing out opponents enough to hail in a few a game. Her passing has been encouraging thus far and it would be another plus to her game if she can be a precision passer. Her defense was impressive while playing last season and this season, Wilson is surely an elite lock-down defender in the conference.
Jada Elston (Jr.) – SG, Middle Township
It took Elston two seasons to finally hit her stride on the floor, and as a junior, my goodness has she taken the CAL by storm. Her scoring average has nearly doubled and she’s more than doubled her three-point shooting totals from the previous two years combined. Elston is an elite scorer in the conference and along the Jersey Shore. Her scoring is actually evenly dispersed between three-pointers, two-point field goals and free throws. This is a player who gets to the line and forces her opponent into foul trouble. That opens the floor for her to capitalize from three, drive into the lane for a tough two or knock down easy midrange jumpers.
Zashirah Jackson (Jr.) – 5-6 PG/SG, Atlantic City
Jackson has been a relatively small contributor statistically over her career, including this season. However, in Atlantic City’s quarterfinal win over Holy Spirit, she had a career day from the floor and dominated against a strong opponent. Jackson has seen the bulk of her success come defensively as she’s very much a lock-down defender for this team. What she did well in this game is finding her opportunities offensively to make plays in the lane. Jackson can dominate as a smaller guard, but she needs to continue to drive and try to make things happen toward the basket.
Julia Hartman (Fr.) – 5-9 SG, Absegami
Hartman is quietly putting together an impressive freshman season, one that has seen her excel from the perimeter and find success as a versatile defender. She’s an agile guard with traits of a forward as we’ve seen from her shot-blocking ability. Hartman won’t be a player who is going to record multiple blocks a game, but she’s able to come in and deflect passes over the course of a game. Her offense begins with her three-point shooting, where over 54 percent of her scoring comes from. Hartman looks comfortable shooting the three as she does playing up on opponents on defense. It’s a fantastic 1-2 combo that helped propel Absegami into the semis.
