Continue ReadingWith the 2021-2022 regular season about to finish up, some teams have already clinched their district while others still have a chance. Friday night features good matchups in various districts across the state with each matchup having a top point guard hit the floor.
To be a top point guard, a player must do a variety of things out on the floor. A point guard has to have a high basketball IQ; The point guard is essentially the quarterback of the offense. This is because the point guard is the primary ball handler. they run the plays, get players into the correct positions, and they must take care of the ball. If unable to recognize defensive coverages and or matchups, a team will typically struggle. On top of that, a top point guard has the ability to find angles and pockets for passes to be made as well as being able to score.
Top Point Guards
Juliana Aragon Juliana Aragon 5'5" | PG Bernalillo | 2022 State NM – 5’5″ PG, Bernalillo, Senior
Senior captain Juliana Aragon Juliana Aragon 5'5" | PG Bernalillo | 2022 State NM is having a terrific season for the Bernalillo Spartans. Aragon takes the Spartans into Friday nights contest as the #7 ranked team in the state with a record of 23-0. The Senior is currently averaging 30 points per game to go along with over 8 assists, both of which are best in the state. Look for Aragon to continue her impressive play and have another outstanding performance.
Deniece Ryan – 5’2″ PG, Highland, Senior
Senior Deniece Ryan is of of many seniors on a Highland Hornets ball club; but there is no doubt she is the driving force behind this squad. As a very crafty ball handle, Ryan has the ability to break defenders and defenses down with ease, allowing her to find an open teammate or the opportunity to score. The Senior comes into Fridays important district matchup with a line of 17 points per game, 4 assists, and 4 rebounds. Expect Ryan to have a great outing against Valencia at home.
Maggie Salas – 5’4″ PG, Mayfield, Senior
Senior Maggie Salas is one of the more solid floor generals due to her ability control the tempo of the game and raise her teams confidence when on the floor. Salas has the ability to score off the dribble with either hand and is having a good season in her own right. Coming into Friday’s important matchup against the Las Cruces Bulldawgs, Salas is averaging 12 points per game and over 3 steals. Salas is an important piece in the Trojans success and it will be evident tonight.
Emma Christiano Emma Christiano 5'4" | PG Las Cruces | 2023 State NM – 5’5″ PG, Las Cruces, Junior
Emma Christiano Emma Christiano 5'4" | PG Las Cruces | 2023 State NM is a lightning quick point guard from Las Cruces who is one of the better backcourt defenders. Christiano has a great instinct for the ball as she does a great job anticipating on defense – Christiano averages over 4 steals per game. Not only a menace on defense, the Junior can also score and pass with averages of 14 ppg and almost 5 apg. Look for Christiano to have a major impact on whether or not the Bulldawgs claim the district crown against Mayfield.
