Mount Mansfield Union High School:
Cherise Shamp, 5’11 G/F – Class of ’23
Cherise is a player who does it all and this game was no different; she was flying from end to end and getting involved in every play. Tonight, we found her working the post as a scorer and as an electric rebounder. I had her down for five points and five boards midway through the first quarter! Defensively she was up to her usual antics with intense on-ball pressure, causing numerous deflections and turnovers for BHS. She finished with a game-high 24 points and 10+ boards. Easily the best player on the court.
Allie Fullem, 6’0 F – Class of ’23
Fullem was a strong defensive presence as she clogged the paint, took charges, and sent a few shots back to sender. Her length and frame cause slashers to think twice, and she has good anticipation on drop passes too. While her shot wasn’t ringing the bell tonight, she is capable of stepping out to three-point land and knocking down the catch and shoot trey. Nevertheless, she collected foul calls and shot well from the charity stripe.
Meadow Worthley, 5’9 G/F – Class of ’22
Worthley made some nice moves in the paint and was efficient offensively. She put in 11 of MMU’s 58 points and tallied up a few rebounds and steals. If she finds consistency in her jumper that’ll open up her game immensely.
Burlington High School:
Nylah Mitchell, 5’9 G/F – Class of ’25:
If you don’t know Nylah, now you know. She’s one of Burlington’s best players as a freshman starter and her basketball IQ is off the charts. MMU is known for gritty, high-pressure defense, but Nylah operated in the high and low post with poise and cunning. Mitchell’s ability to pass out of the post is a shooter’s, and coach’s, dream. She reads the defensive rotations well and knows exactly when and where to kick out. On a handful of rebounds and strips she went coast to coast for controlled and contested finishes. At one point she went on an 8-0 run herself with back-to-back threes and a tough lay-up inside. She’s going to be a problem for years to come.
Bree McDonald, 5’6 PG – Class of ’25:
Another freshman starter for BHS, Bree is coming into her own. Each game Bree faces a tough matchup at the point guard position, but it’s clear she’s not backing down against anyone. She has a tight handle and a good sense of when to advance the ball in transition or slow it down and get into a set. Her shot wasn’t falling but she stayed confident and took good looks. Defensively she disrupts passing lanes and plays within herself. She’s got plenty of time to sharpen her skills and add to her bag; I’m excited to see her development over the years.
