Continue ReadingVT girls played their last week of the regular season with a number of teams vying for the top spot of their respective divisions. In the heat of the playoff chase, there was a number of impressive performances from players across the state. Let’s dive in:
Shelby Companion Shelby Companion 5'6" | CG CVU | 2023 State New E , 5’9 G – CVU Class of ’23
Shelby is a combo guard who’s willing to do a bit of everything. Early in the week she put her scoring in the backseat and put up seven assists in a strong win over third ranked MMU. Over the next two games she averaged 18 points, three assists and three steals. Companion is gritty, confident and willing to do the dirty work. She led CVU to a 3-0 week and they’re poised to clinch a #2 seed for the playoffs.
Addi Hunter, 5’11 F – CVU Class of ’23
Addi too put in some work for CVU this week. She showed out against MMU with 20 points, five rebounds and four assists. She approached a double-double against Burlington later in the week and did all the little things against fourth ranked Essex. Hunter is player who’s cool under pressure, rotates extremely well defensively and boxes out handily. I’ll be excited to see how she elevates her game for the playoffs.
Elyse Macdonough, 5’8 PG – RMHS Class of ’24
Elyse cemented herself as a leader on this Rice team early on. She’s a floor general who knows how to direct traffic and will fill it up in the blink of an eye. She’s got range, good passing instincts and a high basketball IQ. She led Rice to a 3-0 week, averaging over a fourth of RMHS’ scoring output.
Cherise Shamp, 5’11 G/F – MMU Class of ’23
In a week that featured four games in five days you would think Cherise might have some let up, but that just wasn’t the case. The junior led MMU to a 3-1 week that featured a highly efficient 24pt-12rb performance against Burlington. Shamp boards incredibly well with her length and can go end to end easily. Her motor is unmatched as she finds a way to get involved in every possession, ranging from deflecting passes, grabbing loose balls, finishing in the post or snatching boards. MMU is expecting the #3 seed heading into the playoffs.
Nylah Mitchell Nylah Mitchell 5'8" | PF Burlington HighSchool | 2025 State New E , 5’9 G/F – BHS Class of ’25
Nylah is a freshman phenom with the basketball IQ of an upperclassmen. Nylah averaged 16 points and 5+ boards over the week with two of those three games against top D1 talents, CVU and MMU. She put up a spirited 21 points against MMU and did it every which way; she snatched passes and went coast-to-coast, hit threes, and she operated in the high to low post for inside looks. A savvy passer and hardnosed defender, Nylah plays with a poise not many varsity freshman possess.
Reese Perry Reese Perry 5'9" | PF Norton | 2025 State New E 5’10 G/F – WHS Class of ’22
Reese in a new feature on here; she attends a small school, Windsor High School, along the New Hampshire border. Windsor has been a top D3 girls program for a few years due to their intense pressure defense and high-octane offense. Reese is a swiss army knife type hooper; she’ll apply pressure on defense, rebound on the offensive and defensive glass, and fill it up inside or out. She averaged 13 points and a whopping 18 boards for the week. Needless to say, she put in work.
