The Bears starting unit is composed of mainly upperclassman that each contribute to the teams success in their own ways – they know their roles and perform them well- but key contributions seem to be made by Sophomore Eva Love Eva Love 5'9" | SG La Cueva | 2024 State NM . A versatile wing player that can score from multiple areas on the floor and is defensively sound with good hands and anticipation. For the year Love averaged 13 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
Love coming off an injury scare the week prior in the District 2-5A Championship against the Farmington Lady Scorpions, bounced back nicely as she was able to log extensive minutes in her teams opening round win (41-32) against the #14 Sandia Matadors. Love led the bears in scoring and assists with 9 & 3 and grabbed 5 rebounds – although it doesn’t seem like much, it was an entire team effort as six different players scored multiple baskets.
Head Coach Marisa Cogan had the Lady Bears determined to not let the opposing team get into a rhythm; the Bears held the Matadors to under 32% from the field and an even worse, 23% from behind the 3pt line. Forcing 11 turnovers, the Bears defense was relentless against any ball handler the Matadors used.
The Bears now face an Organ Mountain team that has a talented senior guard in Harmanie Dominguez who averaged over 20 points per game to go along with 4 assists. Organ Mountain comes into the contest with a record of 22-8 and winners of their first round matchup against #11 Albuquerque High (61-50).
