Continue ReadingPrep Girls Hoops New Jersey just released its updated 2023 prospect rankings list with over 30 new player entries. There’s plenty to talk about when it comes to new prospects on the list and there’s been some shake-ups looking at different rankings. We wanted to breaking things up positionally, so after taking a look at the top bigs from this class, here are the top five point guards as ranked by the PGH NJ team.
No. 1: Hannah Hidalgo Hannah Hidalgo 5'7" | PG Paul VI | 2023 State NJ – 5-6, Paul VI
Hidalgo is everything you can ask for and look for in a guard and her junior season by far has been her best high school season to date. Talking about pure scoring ability, Hidalgo is one of the best juniors in the country at finding a way to get to the basket or get open for a look. Her shooting motion is flawless and her speed allows her to blow past defenders on the break and swiftly get into the lane for a tough bucket. That speed works well on the defensive end too as she’s often leading breaks due to her quick thinking and ability to cause turnovers off a steal or broken play.
No. 6: Kyla Glasser-Hyman Kyla Glasser-Hyman 5'6" | PG Hightstown | 2023 State NJ – 5-6, Hightstown
It’s incredibly surprising that we didn’t have Glasser-Hyman listed at all on our list previously because she’s a high IQ player on-and-off the court who dazzles. We unfortunately weren’t able to see much of her last spring, but we saw a lot of her this winter and spring as she improved in many different facets of her game. She’s quite nearly a complete player across the board and along with being a dominant scorer, she can rebound and pass as well as anyone at her height in the state. Glasser-Hyman plays up-tempo and fast on the floor and it plays to her game flawlessly.
No. 34: Isabella Asencio Isabella Asencio 5'4" | PG Immaculate Heart Academy | 2023 State NJ – 5-4, Immaculate Heart
Asencio, while an incredibly talented guard with handles and a great ability to score, plays at a disadvantage at the guard position because of her height. Despite that, she can shoot the ball well from beyond the arc and her lower center of gravity is to her advantage when driving into the lane. Asencio’s dribble-drive ability rivals that of most in the state and is an x-factor that helps to elevate her game. Not only that, but her perimeter defense is stellar and that’s an understatement. If she can continue to find open looks, she’s going to be a much more productive player as a senior.
No. 39: Brooke Sztenderowicz Brooke Sztenderowicz 5'7" | PG Cinnaminson | 2023 State NJ – 5-7, Cinnaminson
Sztenderowicz is a gifted shooter, one of the best perimeter shooters in South Jersey as she was knocking down roughly 1.9 threes a game as a junior. Her scoring output greatly increased as a junior and that additional playing time allowed her to find a groove as a three-point shooter. This season alone, she more than doubled her career three-point total with the Pirates and put herself on the map. The key for Sztenderowicz’s continued success will be the work she does in the offseason to perfect that shooting motion, which is already smooth and effortless and from there, keep progressing and improving.
No. 41: Kaitlyn King Kaitlyn King 5'9" | PG Lenape | 2023 State NJ – 5-9, Lenape
King made a big statement for herself this season on a Lenape team that surprised many in the Olympic Conference. They reached the semis of the South Jersey Invitational Basketball Tournament and South Jersey Group IV tournament. King was a big reason for that, controlling the point for Lenape and her game is played mostly inside the perimeter. Just 12 percent of her scoring came from beyond the arc, which shows how much more aggressive of a scorer she’s become from midrange and inside the paint. We’ll see if she can develop more of a three-point shot to add that extra dimension to her game through the summer into next season.
