Continue ReadingThe 2022 Southwest Showcase was a two day event (4/9 – 4/10/22) held at Bell Bank Park/Legacy Sports Park; A 320 acre private family sports and entertainment complex located in Mesa, Arizona. (The Facility had 16 Basketball courts).
There was 35+ teams total in the Varsity Division alone for High School Girls which was then Split into Two brackets – Gold & Silver. The Varsity Gold Bracket then had 5 Sub Tiers of brackets – Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze A & Bronze B
8 teams in platinum bracket – Four #1 seeds, Four #2 seeds (Top 8 overall) Earned by Best record in 2 pool play games + point differential. Double elimination format but if a team loses their 1st game in bracket play, they then drop to lower bracket – Platinum to Gold, Gold to Silver etc.
Here are the names of a few players who did well at the Showcase that represented the State of New Mexico – Either from NM themselves or played for team from NM.
Side Note 1: Team from NM earned Platinum Bracket Berth (Top 8) then finished as Gold Bracket Champions (5th overall out of 35+ teams!)
Side Note 2: El Paso is roughly 30 minutes from NM
Lila Ashida Lila Ashida 5'8" | SG Las Cruces | 2023 State NM , Las Cruces NM 5’7” Junior
Ashida is a hardworking two-way player that impacts the game in multiple ways. Lila really shines as a help side defender with active hands and good instincts; Ashida does a terrific job trapping & doubling from the weakside creating multiple turnovers. On the flip side Ashida can do many things in an offensive set – she can handle the ball, create for others, and score inside/out. Ashida is not afraid to put the ball on the floor and attack the basket as she can finish in the lane and draw fouls.
Jordyn Hernandez, El Paso TX 6’0” Sophomore
Hernandez is an athletic forward that did a phenomenal job battling inside the paint on both ends of the court. Hernandez displayed good footwork on the offensive end utilizing drop steps, up-and-unders’, and pivots to find easy baskets all weekend long. Hernandez can finish on either side of the rim and has the ability to shoot the mid range jumper and 3ball. The Forward is not afraid to defend in the post area as she had good position and does a good job contesting shots and forcing deflections.
Brianna Vargas, El Paso TX 5’4” Junior
Vargas is a combo guard with an explosive first step that can finish in traffic and hit deep 3s in various ways. She can spot up in the corner, hit the step back and can come off a dribble-hand off. Vargas is a solid on ball defender that puts steady pressure during man-to-man sets leading to steals which results in transition layups. Overall Brianna is a complete backcourt player that leaves her mark in the court.
