We’ve yet to talk about some of the newcomers onto the 2023 prospect rankings, which now has over 80 players included. Here is the first of a multi-part series introducing the new crop of prospects.
No. 74: Symiaha Brown-Cobb Symiaha Brown-Cobb PG Paterson Eastside | 2023 State NJ – PG, Paterson Eastside
Having Brown-Cobb ranked this low is definitely a peculiar pick compared to other prospects on this list considering this is a player who has averaged in double-figures each of the last three seasons. What’s most concerning to us is a dip in production in the past two years when looking at averages. However, with things like her passing and defensive stats, there’s a lot to like from her. We’re expecting to see an uptick in production from her this coming season without a doubt.
No. 70: Jada Clayton Jada Clayton 5'7" | PG Point Pleasant Beach | 2023 State NJ – 5-7 PG, Point Pleasant Beach
Clayton has put in work over the past three years, making great progress on her game as the main point guard for this Point Pleasant Beach team. Her interior play and foul shooting have improved and we saw a greater use of the perimeter as a shooter. Clayton will become a better player the more she expands her range and opens the floor. That will allow for more scoring opportunities for her and her teammates, through passes and dribble drive situations.
No. 69: Tylar Cloyd Tylar Cloyd 5'4" | PG South Hunterdon | 2023 State NJ – 5-4 PG, South Hunterdon
Cloyd boosted her game a great amount from her freshman year after not playing as a sophomore. She provided more stability as a rebounder, a much more complete defensive package and a solid all-around offensive game. With nearly one made three-pointer a game, more than eight points a game and around two steals a game, Cloyd turned herself into a must-start player for South Hunterdon. The small things are what boosted her confidence and helped her mature into this veteran role.
No. 80: Raniyah Green Raniyah Green 5'7" | SG East Orange | 2023 State NJ – 5-7 SG, East Orange
Green has fantastic potential, but hasn’t quite put the pieces together as a player. Her junior year was a great start to getting to that point, with 7/5 averages and nearly 1.8 steals a game. She’s not producing eye-catching stats just yet, but she’s consistently making her offensive possessions count and can draw contact regularly. It’s really impressive to watch her operate offensively and then quickly switch the dial to toughen up and get stops on defense.
No. 76: Sarah Hughes Sarah Hughes 5'7" | PG Ranney | 2023 State NJ – 5-7 PG, Ranney
Hughes finished up her second year as a starter for Ranney after coming off the bench as a freshman. With experience as a sophomore already under her belt, she grew in the role, becoming a more poised point guard overall. She’s been a big piece from the perimeter, knocking down 25 three-pointers in 21 games played. Her 8.8 PPG was the third-highest scoring average on the team and her veteran leadership really gave a boost to a relatively young Ranney squad. Hopefully, Hughes will build off those and dominate as a senior.
