She did a nice job of shooting the ball from every level on the court. Ballard was also clutch down the stretch, shooting several midrange jumpers and making some clutch shots on penetrations to the goal. At 5’9″ Ballard rebounded well from the guard position. Defensively, she showed a lot of versatility, defending on the wing and even in the painted area. Ballard wasn’t afraid to be physical on the defensive and even took a charge down the stretch. She can handle the ball and also made some plays with the ball in her hands. The most impressive part of watching her game was her performance down the stretch. The moment was never too big for her and she made clutch play after clutch play to win the game.
Aniyah Fisher Aniyah Fisher 5'9" | SF St. Augustine HS | 2024 State FL , 5’8″ F (ECU 2024 Clarke) showed a lot of versatility, especially on the offensive side of the ball. She scored at all levels on the court. Fisher has always been good in the mid-range game, but the Sophomore has added a more consistent three-ball to her game. The long-range improvement was evident in the Southern Jam tournament, where she connected on multiple long-range shots. Defensively, Fisher is a lengthy player who uses her length to rip the ball, deflect passes, and intercept passes. Fisher is excited to watch in the full-court press. she anticipates well and makes quick breaks on the incoming pass. Fisher was also clutch from behind the free-throw line, scoring 2 free throws in the final seconds to steal a win for her team.
Alana Seward Alana Seward 5'6" | CG Eustis | 2024 State FL , 5’7″ Combo Guard (Hoop Dreams Elite). Seward was a blur all weekend. Her ability to get up and down the court was unmatched at times. Seward has a good midrange game and she can also knock the shot down from long range. Seward was at her best in the open court. She was an exciting player to watch with the ball in her hands and also when she was filling the lanes on fast breaks. She is a dangerous player in the pick and roll with the ball in her hand. Seward’s first step is explosive and she can get to the basket in a hurry.
Channing Warren Channing Warren 6'3" | C Timber Creek | 2024 State FL , 6’3″ C (Blue Star Orlando). It was really a treat watching Warren get up and down the floor. Offensively, she knew what to do with the ball once she got the ball in the paint. With impressive footwork, Warren was able to get off some impressive shots. She has a nice shooting touch in the paint.
Hilary Englert Hilary Englert 5'10" | SF Bolles | 2024 State FL , 5’9″ SF (ECU 2024 Clarke). Englert was impressive during Southern Jam, especially on Day 1. Englert showed her shooting touch from the outside and also scored on some nice finishes at the basket. She also was excellent in the transition game. Englert runs the court well and can finish with the right or left hand. She is also a physical player who doesn’t shy away from contact. She uses her physical play to get to the line. In southern Jam, Englert stood out on the defensive side of the ball. She recorded several steals, by playing the passing lanes and applying good pressure in the full-court press.
These are just a few of the players in the Sophomore class that I was able to see during Southern Jam. The 2024 Class in the State of Florida is loaded with talent.
