Continue ReadingThis past weekend was a so-called ‘live period’ for NCAA college basketball, meaning there were plenty of curious Division 1 coaches in the gym at the Lake Slam. Their focus at Kennedy High School in Bloomington was on the best of the best – Minnesota’s top prospects in Classes 2026 to 2023 – and that’s where we directed most of our attention, as well. Minnesota has a very deep pool of scholarship-level talent. These were some of the players who raised their stock at just the right time at the Lake Slam.
Tucker Downs Tucker Downs 5'11" | CG Mankato West | 2026 State MN & Brylee Miller Brylee Miller 5'10" | SF Fairmont | 2026 State MN – Minnesota Rise 2026 Wright
Tucker knocked our socks off the first time we saw her last year at Wayzata. Ditto for Brylee when we went to the Minnesota Rise fall league in St. Clair. We’ve run into them off and on a number of times since then and the two guards from Southern Minnesota continue to impress with their athleticism, length and overall skill development. Tucker is from Mankato West, stands around 5’10 or so, and plays with a natural flair for the game. She played varsity this winter but has a ways to go in learning how to best put all of those natural gifts to best use. But the kid has D1 written all over her. Brylee is the more physical of the two. She is a weapon on defense, with ample length, speed and quickness at her disposal. On the weekend the Fairmont 8th grader seemed to get a finger on everything and was forcing turnovers and mishandles on the regular. She, too, is a strong scholarship candidate. Dustin Wright’s 2026 Rise squad has a ton of quality prospects but none better than these two.
Keagan McVicker Keagan McVicker 5'9" | CG Hastings | 2025 State MN – Minnesota Fury 2025 UAA
This version of the Fury is loaded with top-end talent, from Maddyn Greenway Maddyn Greenway 5'8" | PG Providence Academy | 2026 State MN and Addison Mack Addison Mack 5'9" | PG Minnehaha Academy | 2025 State MN to Jordan Ode Jordan Ode 5'11" | CG Maple Grove | 2025 State MN , Autumn McCall Autumn McCall 6'2" | PF Centennial | 2025 State MN and Zahara Bishop Zahara Bishop 5'10" | CG Benilde-St. Margaret's | 2025 State MN . As a result, the basketball stylings of Miss McVicker may get overlooked from time to time. The fact is, Keagan has as much impact on the outcome of the game as anyone on the team because she contributes in so many different ways. This year she appears to have had a growth spurt (she might be 5’10 now?) and has filled out substantially. McVicker has strength and speed and is just so good at so many different things with few weaknesses. She can score. She can defend. She can distribute. She can guard. It’s an attractive package to be sure. The 9th grader averaged close to 10 points and 7 rebounds per game at Hastings this year. The combo guard is currently the 11th-ranked freshman in the state.
Mylea Monahan Mylea Monahan 5'7" | CG Glencoe-Silver Lake | 2025 State MN & Tori Schlagel Tori Schlagel 5'9" | CG Eden Prairie | 2025 State MN – North Tartan 2025 Nike
Much like McVicker’s role on the Fury, Monahan and Schlagel seldom earn the credit they deserve for doing the dirty work on a star-studded North Tartan team where the headlines generally go to the likes of Maddyn Greenway Maddyn Greenway 5'8" | PG Providence Academy | 2026 State MN , Sophie Hawkinson Sophie Hawkinson 5'8" | CG Wayzata | 2025 State MN and Bree Bowman Bree Bowman 6'2" | SF Prior Lake | 2025 State MN . In typical fashion, Tori filled up the stat sheet this weekend as she stacked up the assists, steals and rebounds while shooting 66% from the field and going 6-for-7 at the free throw line. The 5’9 guard from Eden Prairie is gritty, with a motor that never quits, a desire to win at all costs, and the willingness to put her body on the line for a loose ball. Everyone loves that about her. Mylea, the latest daughter of Glencoe-Silver Lake coach Jeff Monahan to dominate the courts, is a quiet leader. The 5’7 guard rarely makes mistakes while serving as an excellent distributor, solid tactician and reliable performer who can be counted upon to bury deep threes and come through in the clutch. Schlagel is ranked #7 in the Prep Girls Hoops Class of 2025; Monahan is #16.
Dalia Thornton-Fay – Minnesota Stars Nilsen 2026
We’ve watched Dalia a number of times since first scouting her at the Midwest Kickoff a little over a month ago. The 5’7 guard from Roseville impressed us from the get-go with her athleticism and light feet. She’s got hops, for sure, but that’s only the bare beginnings of what she brings to the fold. On Sunday we saw Dalia at her best and she was a force at both ends of the floor, leading her team to an upset of the 2026 studs from North Tartan Nike. We still haven’t seen Dalia shoot the ball a whole lot, primarily because she is so good at blowing past her defender one-on-one and getting to the rim. She draws a ton of contact and gets frequent free throws as a result. Dalia’s rebounding is especially impressive for a player her size. The 2026s haven’t been ranked yet but Dalia will definitely be making some noise in the class.
Kate Amelotte & Cail Jahnke Cail Jahnke 6'2" | CG St. Michael-Albertville | 2026 State MN – North Tartan 2026 Nike
Collectively, the top group of North Tartan freshmen-to-be didn’t have their best weekend to date. They seemed a little out of sync and were having a hard time getting shots to fall. That will happen to even the best of teams. What they did manage to do, however, was to impress the gathered luminaries with their vast individual potential. No two players drew more notice in that department than Amelotte and Jahnke. Kate is a unique prospect, with size and strength, speed and length, and a bushel full of options in her offensive arsenal. Be aware when she is headed for the hoop because the incoming high schooler from Wayzata is probably going to make something happen. Jahnke just keeps on growing, and the 8th grader from St. Michael-Albertville is one of the longest, leanest 6-footers we’ve ever seen. She did an outstanding job this weekend of using her natural instincts, incredible leaping ability, uber-long arms and amazing agility to get a piece of everything the opposition was trying to do. She rebounded, blocked shots, made plays and scored the basketball. There’s no doubt that both Amelotte and Jahnke are among the very best of the 2026s.
