Continue ReadingWhen the basketball calendar reads June, that means a month-long break for the travel scene and several high schools and colleges host team camps featuring players wearing the same colors they do during the months of November through February.
One of those many camps occurred at the home of the Paladins – Furman University in Greenville. Five courts overall were utilized including its volleyball facility and teams converged on the campus from four states – South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee.
In addition, Prep Girls Hoops made the trip to the Paladins’ home courts for day two – Saturday – of the weekend event. Without further adieu, here are a few upperclassman who upped their games in the Palmetto State’s Upstate.
Liz Boyd – Darlington HS (GA) – Boyd is a two-sport athlete who has also excelled as a lacrosse player in addition to basketball. She presents many a problem for opposing teams as a six-foot frontcourt force. Along with what she can do near the rim, Boyd can also drain her attempts from midrange. Defensively, she is a threat to not only steal the ball, but also reject shots. She scored 10 points on Saturday afternoon in a blowout victory for the Tigers against South Carolina-based High Point Academy and was a major reason why Darlington finished the 2021-22 season with a 20-7 record.
Riley Stack Riley Stack 6'5" | SF Wren | 2023 State SC – Wren HS – Stack continues to stack the collegiate offers as she recently announced Wofford and La Salle as suitors to go along with her existing offers from Winthrop, UNC Charlotte and USC Upstate among others. At 6-foot-5, she presents many a matchup problem for opposing bigs. She wins plenty of rebounding battles and can turn offensive boards into two-point putbacks. Stack is every bit as tall as she is long and that wingspan can come in useful on the defensive end of the floor as a shot blocker. She had a 14-point effort as the Hurricanes defeated Tennessee-based Dobyns-Bennett by a final of 34-24.
Sara Lewis Sara Lewis 6'1" | SF Woodward Academy | 2023 State GA – Woodward Academy – The War Eagles are coming off a season that saw them post a 29-3 record, a 14-0 Region 3-AAAAA mark and a 5A state championship. Lewis is listed at an even six feet and even though that may look like the height of a traditional big, she is versatile and can find time playing the four, the three or the two. Rebounding, making the right passes, coming away with steals and rejecting shots as a defender are other elements to a game that is among the Peach State’s premier ballers. She finished with 11 points in what was a defensive-minded 23-17 victory over Easley out of South Carolina.
Amiah Ellis – Boiling Springs HS – As much as teams and need scorers, teams and coaches need players who can combine scoring with doing many of the little things. Ellis does many of those little things that have a big impact. She is quick and resourceful with the ball in her hand, but takes care of the rock and limits turnovers. As a scorer, she will shoot from either long range or midrange. Defensively, she is tough to contend with and is a constant threat to come away with steals. Ellis had a seven-point performance in a blowout victory for the Bulldogs late Saturday afternoon against Thomas Heyward.
Kyla Cain Kyla Cain 5'11" | SF Galloway | 2023 State GA – Galloway HS – Cain shared the captaincy duties last season for the Scots with three now-graduated seniors and one would assume that would be the case again in 2022-23 as she enters her swan song at Galloway. She is an efficient rebounder who can also organize her team’s halfcourt offense. Cain is not afraid to absorb contact and give herself (and her team) opportunities to sink free throws. She can also display plenty of speed with the ball in her hands as she can get from one end of the floor to the other with a great deal of quickness and agility. Cain scored 13 points in a competitive 47-40 victory over Mount Paran Christian. In 2021, Cain picked up offers from Stony Brook, North Florida and Winthrop.
