Academy of the Holy Names is hosting a June Summer League between 8 high schools in the area: Holy Names, Berkeley Prep, Bloomingdale, Newsome, Tampa Catholic, Keswick Christian, Seffner Christian, and Sumner. They’ll face off against each other on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s this month before being seeded in bracket play on the last Tuesday (28th) and Thursday (30th) of June. Here are some of the top girls I saw that can put the ball in the bucket:
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="439457" first="Nevaeh" last="Lee"] </strong><span style="font-size: 12pt;">| Seffner Christian | 2027</span></span>
Nevaeh is oozing potential. She is going to be a key part of this Seffner team that won 21 games last season, but loses a few pieces to graduation and injury. This season, she will be an 8th grader that will figure to be an impact player on this team in terms of scoring and controlling the pace. Nevaeh has that quick-twitch athleticism and speed to really keep defenders on their heels. I really liked how she controlled the ball, distributed it, and can shoot it from outside. As she matures, she could be one of the best players in Tampa with continued development and experience.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="219990" first="Nini" last="Davenport"] </strong><span style="font-size: 12pt;">| Seffner Christian | 2023</span></span>
Nini will be the backbone of the Seffner squad this season going into her last year. She is the top returner in all of these categories: points, assists, steals, and shooting percentage at all three levels. Having Navaeh bring the ball up the floor will be big for Nini as she is known for being a shooter and one of the best at it in the Tampa Bay area. Nini plays the game hard and will have to step up and continue being a leader for this team that has potential to get back to that 20-win mark.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="441103" first="Jayda" last="Pinder"] </strong><span style="font-size: 12pt;">| Academy of the Holy Names | 2023</span></span>
Jayda is one of the best athletes in the area and the state. Outside of her track success, she’s a very talented hooper too. AHN hit 20 wins last season, and she is a top returner as the team leader in scoring, shooting %, and steals. She uses her speed and athleticism to get to the rim and score with great body control. On defense, she gets in those passing lanes and she’s gone once she gets that steal. Keep an eye of this AHN team who returns 4 of their 5 starters on a 20-9 team.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="219943" first="Renita" last="Harris"] </strong><span style="font-size: 12pt;">| Tampa Catholic | 2023</span></span>
Tampa Catholic is going to be a team to watch this year as they look for their first season over .500 since 2018-2019. They return a lot with Renita being a key piece as the team’s leader in points, assists, steals, and FT %. Renita helped her team overcome a 12-point deficit to a quality Bloomingdale team in the league’s first night to come out with a 7-point W. I’m always impressed with Renita’s motor and her ability to finish around the rim with both hands. I would not to be shocked to see TC come away with a winning season and some noise made in Tampa.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="441107" first="Kayla" last="Ludwig"] </strong><span style="font-size: 12pt;">| Newsome | 2023</span></span>
Newsome will return a majority of their roster from a 17-win season with Kayla being the top returner. Kayla led the team in scoring, steals, blocks, and FT/FG percentage. She plays with good energy and uses her size and frame to her advantage on the defensive end to force turnovers and finish the play. Kayla can range out to the arc or score it from 15 feet and in with soft touch and a will to score. Newsome absolutely had a chance to improve and hit that 20-win mark if they can get all get on the same page.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="439459" first="Ashley" last="Knox"] </strong><span style="font-size: 12pt;">| Tampa Catholic | 2026</span></span>
Ashley is going to be a huge addition to the TC team as an incoming freshman. She has good size that helps her secure rebounds on a team that already boards it well, but she will bring a good shot from outside that will really add another level of offense that this team needs. Continue to keep an eye on her as one of the best 2026’s in Florida who will help a TC squad with size and athleticism reach their goal of having a successful season.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="441104" first="Lucy" last="Morey"] </strong><span style="font-size: 12pt;">| Academy of the Holy Names | 2024</span></span>
Lucy is a glue player on this team that does a little bit of everything. She will be the top returner in assists and the number 2 returner in points, steals, and shooting percentage from the line and behind the arc. Lucy has really good form and rotation on her shot, but she can also use a shot fake and get around her defender for an easy bucket or to set up her teammate. AHN is going to make some noise in Tampa and the state with a really strong trio returning and some quality role players looking to step up.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="441109" first="Ava" last="Knauer"] </strong><span style="font-size: 12pt;">| Bloomingdale | 2023</span></span>
It’s great to see Ava back on the floor after her untimely knee injury at the State Final Four in Lakeland. She will be the number two returning scorer with the top percentages from the FT line and behind the 3-point line. June will be a good month for her to get the feel back for the game with live basketball before July and then school ball comes around. Bloomingdale went 25-6 last season with an appearance in the State Final Four in large part to a balanced roster with Ava being one of those top players who brings back a high level of experience going into her final year as one of the top scorers on her team.
