Recently we updated the rankings for the Class of 2023. Throughout the Spring & Summer, a number of players from that class have stood out for one reason or another, therefore there was a lot of movement within our Summer rankings update for that 2023 class. I wanted to discuss a few of those young ladies who have really stepped up their play since our Spring update, so below are seven such individuals.

– Trinity has been a nice all-around basketball player since I first saw her in 8th Grade, but over the past 12-18 she has really taken another step and shown a lot more discipline and maturity to her game. She is taking on more ball-handling responsibilities, and she will likely spend a lot of time on the ball this season for the Panthers. She has a nice basketball IQ, a good motor, and she’s a tough-nosed kid who isn’t afraid to be in the action. I also like her ability to score it in a variety of ways, plus she’s an effortful defender.

– Kristin had a great July and should be rewarded for her strong play by an uptick in college interest. She has great length, wiry strength, and she’s a deceptively quick/fast athlete who changes directions almost seamlessly. She plays at high speed, bouncing all over the floor, and she’s a playmaker, whether she’s creating offense off the bounce or causing havoc at the defensive end of the floor. She’s a very consistent perimeter shooter as well, but I’m not sure you see enough of it because she’s always in the paint.

– Winchester should be a top team in Class 2A this Winter, and Caitlyn will be a big part of their success. She is extremely long, fluid, and smooth. She plays a point forward role for them, she’s very creative off the bounce, but she also gets downhill for scores or draws a lot of contact and gets to the free throw line regularly. She’s a capable perimeter shooter as well. Defensively, she has the length and quickness to defend a few points guards, bigger guards, and small forwards. She always stuffs the stat sheet.

– “Cita” is one of the state’s better athletes who not enough people know about. She is a long, wiry-strong, run-and-jump kid who moves very well in all directions. She plays with a great motor, good speed and quickness, and she has a nice toughness to her game. Offensively, she is best off the bounce, constantly attacking the basket. But defensively, she can pressure the ball 84-feet, she is great from help-side affecting passing lanes and getting deflections/steals, plus she’s a willing and capable rebounder as a wing.

– Brea had a couple of really nice games when I was able to see her in early July. She is a highly skilled forward who can play inside-out. She has the perimeter skill to knock down open 3-pointers consistent, plus she can productively put the ball on the floor three to four dribbles and get somewhere with it. She’s great in the mid-post, and she’ll pursue rebounds as well. She was originally committed to the University of Indianapolis, but with the coaching change she has reportedly reopened her recruiting.

Lightning 17U
– Kyndell had a nice Spring and Summer last year, but her role during the 2021-2022 season was a little less than anticipated due to a couple of key transfers. Still, though, she contributed for the Grizzly Cubs and has seemingly come back on a mission this Spring and Summer. She is a high-level shooter, with range beyond the 3-point line. She looks noticeably stronger and more physical, and she’s starting to show a lot more versatility at both ends of the floor. I think she will only continue to improve in college.

– Lilly has done a really nice job of adding to her game over the past 8-12 months. She is playing stronger and more physical, and you can see it at both ends of the floor. Offensively, she is much more aggressive to the basket, absorbing contact and finishing at the rim better. Defensively, she is much more assertive and “sticking” to her matchups, especially away from the ball. She’s also handling the ball more and with poise/control, but she has been and always will be one of the state’s better shooters in 2023.
