Day two of the Tournament of Champions was great. I got to see some of the best from all over the state under one roof. Today, I’ll get to plenty of kids from around Wisconsin and beyond.
[player_tooltip player_id="266985" first="Kloe" last="Zentkowski"]
You won’t find many more physically gifted guards than Zentkowski. The Superior native is a legit 6-foot-1 with lead guard skills. Watching her maneuver how she does is an incredible experience because kids her size in this state don’t do that. The more people see her play, the more they’ll love her.
[player_tooltip player_id="156075" first="Laney" last="Havlovitz"]
I love guards who play hard every second they’re on the floor. The Wild Rose guard is quick as a hiccup and changes directions incredibly well. Havlovitz makes defenses react to her and does an incredible job beating her initial defender to create advantages.
[player_tooltip player_id="209879" first="Trista" last="Fayta"]
Two words describe Fayta, serial winner. Everything she does revolves around winning. In turn, she wins everywhere she goes. I believe she could pick a random niche sport and figure out how to be good at it in about an hour. She does everything you’d want a lead guard to do at a high level. Fayta is one of the best lead guards in the midwest.
[player_tooltip player_id="448251" first="Faith" last="Walder"]
I’ve never seen anyone more comfortable finishing with their "weak" hand than Walder. She may not be the biggest kid, but I haven’t seen any paint defender fluster her and change her shot at the basket. The more she develops her overall offensive game, we’ll see a complete offensive player. Walder has a great platform to build from going forward.
Alyvia McCorkle
Alviya McCorkle is one of my favorite kids to watch out of Iowa. She has so much energy and flies all over the floor. Her liveliness at the point of attack sets the tone that her opposition has to match, but her teammates do as well. When you see a kid take away breathing space the second her matchup crosses halfcourt, you don’t want to let that kid down. When she steps on the floor, I sit up and get ready for the pace to pick up.
[player_tooltip player_id="448243" first="Katelyn" last="McGinnis"]
The Kimberly guard is one of the most pragmatic guards I know. McGinnis doesn’t need to do anything flashy to get the job done. Whenever she gets the ball, it looks like she’d prepared to attack that specific defense for years. She’s a smooth wing who can score at all three levels.
[player_tooltip player_id="448250" first="Gianna" last="Guarascio"]
I saw Guarascio play a physical game. There was a lot to take away from what Guarascio did. Even though some unnecessary plays affected her team, Guarascio played well and stuck to what she did best. She made some perimeter jumpers, got to the basket, and finished through contact.
[player_tooltip player_id="266987" first="Shae" last="Kelley"]
I haven’t seen Kelley play as well as she did on Monday. She scored the ball multiple ways and continued to excel on the defensive end. In AAU, you can tell that the offensive side of the game is starting to come to her. That’s scary.
[player_tooltip player_id="209900" first="Sydney" last="Cherney"]
Cherney fits the mold of one of my favorite types of players. She is all over the place and finds ways to be the first on the floor for every loose ball. I don’t think anyone in Wisconsin plays with a higher motor than Cherney, and she plays that way in the Run 4 Roses title game and a matchup for Reedsburg when she likely knows her team would win by 70.
[player_tooltip player_id="209592" first="Sarah" last="Aleknavicius"]
The Grafton native played well in Chicago. When she’s at her best, she makes the game look easy. Aleknavicius looks like she glides and can make any shot or pass she wants. My thing with her is wanting her to be aggressive. She was that in Chicago. She didn’t hesitate to take jumpers, attacked the basket, and fought for position in the paint.
