While I did get to see a few of the older teams play at the PGH 2k22 event in Chicago this week, my main focus in this tournament was to view the younger players, so I had most of my attention on the 2025, 2026 and 2027 teams the last couple of days.
The GameChanger point guards are a group of rising young point guards who see their game continue to grow as they learn about the game.
Aubrey Birmingham, Illinois Dream 2026
She played in the first game I saw in the event, and quickly made me take notice with her solid play. She does a good job penetrating and is able to play through contact, with the ability to mix it up in the paint if needed. She is a good floor leader and despite being a younger player, Aubrey could have a good future ahead of her with continued skill development and just gaining experience at the position.
Maddie Locke, Full Package Black 2027
Like Aubrey, it is just a matter of Maddie getting experience at the point, but in the game I saw her, she possess good footwork and is able to put the ball in the floor and get to the rim. She has good court awareness and court vision, along with good active hands on the defensive side of the ball. Her on-ball defense was solid, and even though her team was giving away years and experience in many of the games this week, she held her own.
Journey Smith Journey Smith 5'6" | PG Sylacauga | 2025 State AL , Alabama Twisters 2025
Loved the way she played the game, showed good basketball IQ and being a coaches kid, that will help her develop over the next couple of years. I liked her court vision and she moves well without the ball, getting into her spots to be productive. She has good athleticism and agility, and on her penetrtion to the rim, she has good body control and can finish through contact. Plays solid on-ball defense.
Sophia Allen, MSF Flight 2025
Like the rest of the players listed, Sophia is learning about the game every day as she continues to grow and develop her skill set. She has good hands and has a good midrange game which is effective in her offensive game. She has good court vision and is able to find her teammates with the pass.
Mariah Adams, Illinois Dream 2025
Not a bad day for Mariah in the game I saw her against a very talented Full Package 2025 Black team. She showed her quickness which was disruptive at times for her opponent and she does a good job anticipating the game, which showed her maturity in the game. She can get to the rim at any time, and is effective with the ball in her hands. Excited to see how how her game develops over the winter.
